Description
Characteristics and tasting tips for Château Lynch-Moussas 2002
Tasting
Colour
The wine reveals a deep ruby-purple hue, both intense and brilliant.
Nose
The aromatic bouquet opens with expressive notes of blackberry and small black berries, lifted by delicate floral touches. Barrel ageing contributes subtle nuances of vanilla, coffee and sweet spices.
Palate
Medium- to full-bodied, the palate offers a lovely density, structured by ripe, firm tannins. The whole is harmonious, leading to a fresh, fruity finish of moderate length but beautifully executed.
Food and wine pairings
This red wine is a superb match for a rack of lamb roasted with porcini mushrooms or a slow-braised leg of lamb. It also makes an elegant partner for beef fillet with mushrooms, game birds such as pigeon, and aged hard cheeses like a mature Comté or Beaufort.
Serving and cellaring
Château Lynch-Moussas 2002 entered its peak drinking window from 2007 onwards. Thanks to its fine structure, it can be fully enjoyed until around 2017, developing complex tertiary aromas over time.
The classic elegance of a Pauillac Grand Cru Classé
The estate
Founded in 1749 by Thomas Lynch, Château Lynch-Moussas is a Fifth Growth located in Pauillac, in the renowned Bordeaux region. After a period of decline, this historic estate enjoyed a true renaissance under the Castéja family, who have owned it since 1919. Now run by Philippe Castéja, the property covers more than sixty hectares. The château stands out for its ability to combine the power typical of its terroir with genuine approachability, producing harmonious wines that remain true to their prestigious appellation.
The vineyard
The estate's vineyard thrives on superb Günzian gravel rises within the Pauillac appellation, resting on a clay subsoil. This exceptional terroir, neighbouring some illustrious names, enjoys an oceanic climate tempered by the Gironde estuary. Vineyard management is geared towards environmentally friendly practices, favouring mechanical tillage to limit the use of herbicides. Rigorous canopy work, such as suckering and shoot thinning, ensures optimal aeration and perfect ripeness of the grapes.
The vintage
2002 stands out as a classic vintage in the Médoc, marked by sometimes contrasting weather conditions that required great care to bring the berries to full ripeness. In the face of these climatic challenges, selection proved essential, resulting in very low yields that concentrated the fruit and produced grapes of fine quality.
Vinification and ageing
The hand-harvested grapes undergo a meticulous double sorting, first in the vineyard and then in the cellar, before precise destemming and crushing. The vinification of Château Lynch-Moussas 2002 aims to extract the very essence of the fruit while preserving its finesse. The wine is then carefully aged for 14 to 18 months in oak barrels, 60% of which are renewed each year, providing a solid structure and controlled micro-oxygenation.
