Château Ducru-Beaucaillou, the Excellence of a Great Saint-Julien Terroir
The Estate
Founded in 1720, Château Ducru-Beaucaillou is a historic estate in Bordeaux. Located within the prestigious Saint-Julien appellation, its vineyard spans approximately 75 hectares. Owned by the Borie family since 1942, it is today brilliantly run by Bruno-Eugène Borie. This second growth has established itself as a truly world-renowned name, celebrated for the elegance and longevity of its wines. Its rich history and strong identity, deeply rooted in an exceptional terroir, make it one of the essential jewels of the Left Bank.
The Vineyard
The vines flourish at the heart of the Saint-Julien appellation, on magnificent Günz-era gravel rises bordering the Gironde estuary. This deep, stony terroir promotes optimal root growth and helps regulate temperatures. The estate practises high-precision, environmentally responsible viticulture, certified HVE3 and ISO 14001. The soils are worked mechanically, without any use of herbicides, and the high planting density encourages healthy competition between the vines, ensuring grapes of great concentration.
The Vintage
The year 2002 was marked by a classic, cool climate typical of the Left Bank. The growing season's weather conditions favoured a slow, steady ripening process, preserving lovely natural acidity and allowing a solid tannic structure to develop, far removed from the excess heat of sun-drenched vintages.
Winemaking and Ageing
The hand-harvested grapes undergo a rigorous sorting process, including state-of-the-art optical selection. Vinification took place in small-capacity, truncated conical stainless steel tanks, allowing for tailored, plot-by-plot work. The wine was then carefully aged in oak barrels, with a significant proportion of new wood, to refine its structure and give it great ageing potential.
