Description

The density and finesse of a Margaux red wine

The estate

Château d’Issan is a Bordeaux estate renowned since the 12th century. This great Margaux wine has been elevated to the height of its potential by the Lorenzetti family, who also own estates in Saint-Estèphe and Pauillac, together with the Cruse family.

The vineyard

Château d'Issan 2021 is a Margaux wine that stems from a 59-hectare vineyard. Spread over three appellations, this vineyard rests on hills of gravel and alluvial soil, typical features of the appellation.

The vintage

A winter marked by alternating mild and cool temperatures preceded a mild spring, which favoured an early budburst. The vineyard was not affected by the frosts thanks to its geographical location at an altitude of 600 metres above sea level. Despite the particularly dry conditions in April, the risk of water stress was avoided thanks to sufficient water reserves. Flowering was optimal. The hot summer was punctuated by rainy spells in early July. Harvesting was carried out in a plot-by-plot manner in order to ensure that the grapes were harvested at optimum maturity.

Vinification and ageing

The grapes are harvested by hand and carefully transported to the gravity-fed vat room where they are vinified by parcel in temperature-controlled stainless steel vats. The wine is aged in barrels (of which 50% are new).

The blend

Cabernet Sauvignon (65%)

Merlot (30%)

Cabernet Franc (2%)

Malbec (2%)

Petit Verdot (1%).

Château d'Issan 2021: Characteristics and tasting tips

The tasting

With its balance, its amplitude and its very fine tannins, this 2021 vintage reveals certain similarities with the 2014 vintage.
