Decanter

A fresh and engaging showing: a wet-stone note on the nose alongside bright red cherry fruit gives an immediate sense of lift. The palate packs plenty of juice, underpinned by lively acidity (pH 3.35) that keeps everything energetic, if not quite as seamlessly balanced as the best examples in this vintage that marry ripeness and freshness more completely. Still, a well-crafted wine with good vibrancy and charm - and more convincing than some peers in this price range, and an enjoyable expression overall.

Quite floral, and filled with sweet, ripe, red fruits, and a touch of licorice that creates the nose. On the palate, the wine is soft, supple, creamy, silky, and fresh, leaving you with more of those sweet, red fruits, plums, and a touch of salty-cocoa in the finish. The wine is made from 80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Franc. 13.5% ABV. Drink from 2028-2042. 92-94 Pts

The freshness of the clay-limestone terroirs is undeniably striking, as the bouquet highlights chalky nuances and fresh fruit. Dense on the attack, the wine stands out for its energy, vitality, and freshness. It can be enjoyed in its youth, but it has everything needed for ageing… if you can manage to wait, which I strongly doubt!

Description

An expressive and structured wine from Castillon Côtes de Bordeaux

The estate

Located in the Bordeaux region, Château d'Aiguilhe has origins dating back to the Middle Ages, but its vineyard was truly established in 1920 by Étienne Martineau. Acquired in 1989 by Count Stephan von Neipperg, its current owner and managing director, this emblematic estate stands out for its commitment to sustainable and certified organic viticulture. Today, the estate is renowned for producing wines of character that express the full richness of its exceptional terroir.

The vineyard

Planted within the Castillon Côtes de Bordeaux appellation, in Saint-Philippe-d'Aiguille, the vineyard reaches an altitude of 110 metres on clay-limestone soils. Benefiting from an ideal southern exposure and excellent natural drainage, the vines, with an average age of 28 years, are cultivated according to a biodynamic and certified organic approach, excluding any pesticide or herbicide.

Vinification and ageing

Fermentation takes place in wooden and concrete vats, accompanied by pneumatic punching down for optimal extraction. After a 26-day maceration, 75% of the wine is aged in barrels (including 20% new oak) on fine lees, while the remaining 25% ages in wooden and concrete vats.

Grape varieties

80% Merlot, 20% Cabernet Franc.
