Château Capbern 2019

Seductive blackberry notes and top-class oak; a full-bodied attack, juicy, racy development, noticeable acidity and crisp tannins; the very high alcohol level is well concealed and only becomes dominant on the finish.

Alluring, with range and character, showing black tea, sweet bay leaf, violet, black currant preserve and singed alder hints. This is carried by a substantial but fine-grained structure, ending with a late sanguine hint. Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Petit Verdot. Drink now through 2032.

Powerful and impactful, and the alcohol, although well balanced by the fruit, does affect the texture and mouthfeel of this wine, which is gourmet and full of chocolate, damson and tar. High drama in this vintage. 60% new oak. A yield of 40hl/ha. pH 3.9.

A perfumed nose of mulberries, dark cherries, earth, black tea, cloves and cedar. Full-bodied with tight, sinewy tannins. Well structured and balanced with a fleshy texture and a flavorful, long finish. Big wine. Drink from 2025.

The 2019 Capbern is ripe and flamboyant, with soft edges and superb balance. It's a big wine, there is no doubt about that, and yet it also boasts terrific harmony. Dark fruit, new leather, licorice and chocolate build as the 2019 gains intensity through the mid-palate and into the finish. The 15.1% alcohol is not terribly evident.

Inky dark in color, the wine kicks off with layers of plushly textured dark red fruits, espresso, spice, and round, polished tannins. The fruit-filled finish is lush, round, and opulent, with length and richness in the fruit. Clearly, this is a new level of quality for Capbern. Drink from 2024–2040.

I love the nose on the 2019 Château Capbern, a medium- to full-bodied, spicy, rich beauty packed with tobacco and cedar pencil, with ripe yet building tannins, a great mix of richness and freshness, and a blockbuster finish. It’s incredibly impressive, and while it offers pleasure even today, it deserves 5–6 years of bottle age, and I can’t imagine it not evolving for two decades.

A blend of 69% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot, and 1% Petit Verdot, the 2019 Capbern is deep garnet-purple in color. It slides out of the glass with eager-to-please scents of crushed black cherries, black raspberries, and fresh blackcurrants, plus suggestions of candied violets and clove oil. The full-bodied palate is laden with juicy black fruits, supported by ripe, grainy tannins and seamless freshness, finishing long and layered.

The freshness and fruity intensity of Cabernet Sauvignon immediately give Capbern a very inviting character. A juicy, creamy attack where the freshness of the Cabernet comes through. This Capbern is energetic, vibrant, and still needs to channel its vigor. Lovely aromatic expression on the finish.

Logo on the cork: JL (Lafitte Liège) My highest score awarded to this cru during En Primeur is holding up beautifully. Intense color with black and purple highlights. Very aromatic nose, fine, fruity, pure, with an inky nuance. Plush on entry, complete and rich at mid-palate, with plenty of flavor, the wine builds crescendo on the finish, with depth of taste and perfectly wrapped tannins. A superb outsider.

For this estate within the orbit of Calon Ségur, the cabernets, markedly up to 69%, orchestrate a festival paying tribute to their limestone terroir. Plenty of silkiness, precise yet ripe, with harmonious flavors of dark fruit and licorice, all wrapped in a tangy harmony.

Concentrated, crisp fruit on the nose, lifted by gregarious floral notes (rose). Delicious on the palate—fresh and voluptuous at the same time—perfectly balanced, with beautiful substance and chew. A wine with immense drinkability.

Big black, smoky flavors give this wine great weight. It is powered by its tannins and its density. Licorice and dark coffee flavors show some extraction. Drink from 2026
