Robert Parker

William Kelley

While the 2018 Chablis Grand Cru Bougros was inscrutable when I tasted it during its élevage a year ago, it was in fine form this spring, unwinding in the glass to reveal aromas of pear, white flowers, orange rind and peach. Medium to full-bodied, muscular and textural, it's ample and fleshy, with ripe but racy acids and fine depth at the core.

Peach, apple and lanolin aromas and flavors are the hallmarks of this white. Vivid and mouthwatering, it leaves a chalky feel on the finish. Best from 2021 through 2028. 150 cases imported.

Wine Enthusiast

Anne Krebiehl MW

Cooling, mossy chalkiness plays on this wine's nose, despite the heat of 2018. The palate then displays juicy roundness in the form of ripe, yellow pear pervading chalky depth. Rich lemon-peel notes create contour and add mouthwatering brightness to this concentrated, understated wine that comes with subdued but distinct power. Drink 2025–2045.

Sweet apples and pears with some stone and flint on the nose. Full-bodied with tight, focused phenolics that frame the wine nicely and then layers of fruit and lively acidity. Nicely crafted and composed. Drinkable now, but better in 2022.

Vegetal, flinty with a hint of nuttiness, the Bougros displays a marked chewy, chalky texture. Brisk acidity carries through the long, flinty finish. (TJ)

The estate

Founded in 1959 by William Fèvre, Domaine William Fèvre is now regarded as one of Chablis’ essential benchmark estates. Rooted in Burgundy, the estate was acquired in 1998 by Joseph Henriot and then in 2024 by Domaines Barons de Rothschild Lafite. It spans around 78 hectares, including 15 hectares of Grands Crus. Under the direction of the talented oenologist Didier Séguier, named White Winemaker of the Year in 2018, the estate has moved away from new oak in favor of the pure expression of its terroirs. The domaine manages 130 different plots, each vinified separately to respect the singularity of every Climat.

The vineyard

Grand Cru Bougros is among the seven Climats classified as Grand Cru within the Chablis appellation. This exceptional terroir benefits from a privileged exposure and Kimmeridgian soils typical of the region, composed of marl and fossil-bearing limestone. These unique geological conditions give the wines their hallmark minerality and excellent aging potential.

The vintage

The 2018 vintage was marked by particularly warm, sunny weather conditions. This generous, sun-filled year produced grapes of outstanding ripeness while preserving natural freshness thanks to cool nights typical of the Chablis climate. Harvest took place under optimal conditions, giving rise to concentrated, well-balanced wines.

Vinification and aging

The Chablis Grand cru "Bougros" Domaine William Fèvre 2018 is vinified according to the estate’s traditional methods. Aging takes place 70 to 80% in medium-aged French oak barrels (around five years old), with no new oak used. This approach preserves the terroir’s mineral expression while adding complexity and structure to the wine. Aging on fine lees with regular bâtonnage enriches the texture and develops the aromas.
