Vinous

Neal Martin

The 2021 Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru has quite a heavy reduction on the nose, although it seems proportionate to the fruit behind it. The palate is quite reductive but there is balance here, a silver thread of acidity lightly spiced with a dab of stem ginger and lemongrass towards the finish. This has more character and energy than Olivier Leflaive's Bâtard and I am intrigued to see how it will age in bottle. Tasted blind at the Burgfest tasting.

La RVF

With a pâtissière note, it evolves in the glass towards a delicate hint of pistachio. The fruit opens up on the palate with broad, concentrated, and powerful juice, delivering intense flavors. A grand cru as solid as a rock with a beautiful saline imprint on the finish. After a day of opening, it gained in scope, with a majestic, telluric energy.

Description

The power and complexity of a great Burgundy white wine

The estate

The story of the beautiful Vincent Girardin house began in 1980. At the age of 19, Vincent Girardin joined the family profession of winemaking that it had been doing since the 17th century. He began his activities with the two hectares of vines he inherited from his parents. A passionate winegrower at heart, Vincent Girardin quickly made a name for himself among the great names of Burgundy’s Côte de Beaune. Founded in 1992, Vincent Girardin has since become one of the finest references in the appellation. Since 2000, the talented Eric Germain has been following in Vincent Girardin's footsteps, bringing out with passion the exceptional terroirs of Meursault and Puligny-Montrachet.

The vineyard

This Grand Cru is made from plots in the commune of Chassagne-Montrachet and Puligny-Montrachet. Located between 240 and 250 metres above sea level, the vines are on average 50 years old and thrive on thick brown clay soils from the Jurassic period.

Winemaking and ageing

The grapes are carefully selected from the vines at the vineyard and at the winery. After a gentle pressing and settling, the must is placed in 228 litre French oak barrels (15 to 20% new) to begin fermentation under the influence of indigenous yeasts. The wine is aged on fine lees for 18 months without stirring. The wines are lightly filtered and bottled according to the lunar calendar.
