The richness and precision of a Saint-Véran white wine
The estate
Founded in 1990 by the Belgian Jean-Marie Guffens and his wife Maine, the négociant house Verget has established itself as an essential reference in Burgundy, particularly in the Mâconnais. Driven by the conviction that "the best wine comes from the best grapes", the estate stands out through a rigorous selection of fruit and exclusively manual harvesting. Today, the estate remains guided by the vision of Jean-Marie Guffens, supported since 2006 by production manager Julien Desplans, who continues this pursuit of excellence and precision through bespoke winemaking.
The vineyard
This Saint-Véran wine is a blend of several distinct plots located in the commune of Davayé. The vines flourish on poor, stony soils of marly limestone, very rich in calcium carbonate. The vineyard notably includes the Pommard climat, north-facing and providing great freshness, as well as plots in La Côte-Rôtie, Terres-Noires, Combes and Bergates, which give the grapes optimal ripeness and aromatic richness.
The vintage
The year 2024 began with mild winter temperatures leading to early budbreak, leaving the vines vulnerable to the violent frost episodes that occurred in April. May and June were then marked by significant rainfall, complicating flowering. While overall sunshine was limited, August brought welcome hot and dry conditions. Finally, intense sunshine from mid-September onwards allowed the berries to reach ideal ripeness by harvest time.
Winemaking and aging
The grapes for this Saint-Véran Village "Terroirs de Davayé" 2024 are hand-harvested over successive passes. Pressing is carried out with precision to retain only the first juices, ensuring richness and quality. Fermentation takes place half in stainless steel tanks and half in oak barrels, continuing until the end of November for the latter. The wine is then aged on the lees with regular stirring, preserving mineral freshness while developing the wine's complexity.
Grape variety
100% Chardonnay.
