The wine of the vintage (and I'll include all the wines of the northern Rhône, red and white in that grouping) is the 2014 Ermitage l'Ermite Blanc. Always made from 100% Marsanne that comes from the granite soils of the l'Hermite lieu-dit, it was aged 11 months in 25% new demi-muids before being bottled unfined and unfiltered. Its medium-gold color is followed by a heavenly bouquet of liquid rock, hazelnut, caramelized pineapples, stone fruits and quince. Thick, unctuous, full-bodied, thrillingly pure and laser focused with a dry, blockbuster finish that just won't quit, it needs 2-3 years of cellaring and will drink nicely over the following three or more decades.

  • 2012 Pessac-Leognan Blanc, Cru Classé from Bordeaux.

The nose and palate of this Pessac-Leognan Blanc are contrasted. The aromas released are a sign of a very fresh wine. Citrus fruit notes prevail and pink grapefruit hints take over the senses. A bold 2012 Haut-Brion white wine is expected. The attack is unctuous; the wine is full-bodied and very strong. The vibrancy, at first restrained, is felt again on the palate to stretch this Cru Classé de Graves on a good length. The 2012 Haut-Brion is a great vintage wine.

    Wine Advocate-Parker :
Tasted blind at the Southwold 2012 tasting. The 2012 Haut-Brion Blanc has an entrancing bouquet of honeysuckle, fresh pear and greengage that is beautifully defined and seamlessly enmeshed with the oak. The palate is well balanced with just a patina of new oak, smooth and harmonious, fine mineralité here with a spicy finish that leaves the tongue tingling. This is very well crafted and it will just get better and better. Yes, my drinking window does advise ten years in bottle, since in my experience only this and the late Laville Haut-Brion age so magnificently. Therefore, that score may well rise in the future if I am ever afforded a chance to re-taste this superb white Bordeaux. Tasted January 2016.

  • 2012 Pessac-Leognan Rouge Premier Cru Classe

The Merlot makes-up two third of the 2012 Chateau Haut-Brillon. The nose is subtle, elegant, and very complex, with rich bouquet: delicate red fruit notes, blackberry, blackcurrant, but also liquorice, roasted, wood, and almost floral. The palate presents a tight structure at first, though quickly reveals blended tannins for a milder, thicker texture, but also juicy and tasty. This Pessac-Leognan 1er Cru Classe carries beautiful length.

    Wine Advocate-Parker :
Tasted blind at the Southwold 2012 tasting, the 2012 Haut-Brion has an open and generous bouquet with blackcurrant pastille, cassis and briary aromas the exude very pure Merlot. The palate is medium-bodied with a sumptuous opening that is rare in 2012: rounded and generous, caressing in the mouth with black plum and blackcurrant towards the finish, residues of truffle and white pepper lingering on the aftertaste that turn very savory after 15 minutesùbacon fat or Italian cured meats. There is a lot to love about this Haut-Brion although in this blind showing I scored it the same as La Mission Haut-Brion. Who will stick their neck out as the two wines mature? Tasted January 2016.

  • Wine Advocate-Parker :
The 2013 Châteauneuf du Pape Hommage a Jacques Perrin is a beast of a wine that's shed most of the baby fat it showed from barrel. A normal blend of 60% Mourvèdre, 20% Grenache, and the rest Syrah and Counoise, this tiny production release has incredible minerality to go with searing black and blue fruits, forest floor, smoked earth and leather. Full-bodied, inky, concentrated and backwards with a serious kick of tannin, it will need a decade of cellaring to be approachable. I suspect it will have 2-3 decades of longevity.

  • As a tribute to the founder of Ca'del Bosco, the Annamaria Clementi cuvee was created from the best grapes of the different Franciacorta plots of the estate, only during exceptional vintages. Great care was taken during the vinification. It then has aged for 7 years on lees in order to obtain a spectacular golden cuvee, with a fine and elegant effervescence. The 2006 Annamaria Clementi is characterised by a very complex bouquet and beautiful aromatic strength on the palate.
