Brut Champagne: The Art of Blending
A Symbol of Style and Consistency
A signature of every Champagne House, brut champagne is crafted each year through precise blends created by the Cellar Masters. Regardless of the vintage quality or the harvest volume, the challenge is to reproduce a cuvée that symbolizes the identity of the House. Mostly non-vintage, this champagne is often referred to as Brut Sans Année (BSA) and represents the majority of champagne consumed in France.
The Subtle Balance of Dosage
Brut champagne is defined by the amount of liqueur d’expédition added after disgorgement. This liqueur, a refined mixture of pure cane sugar and reserve wine, is essential to maintaining a consistent style from year to year. The creation of a vast selection of reserve wines is therefore crucial for producing a Brut which, according to European regulations, contains less than 12 grams of sugar per liter, adjusted at the dosage stage.
The Diversity of Brut Champagne: Vintage and Non-Vintage
While brut champagne is often non-vintage, there are also vintage versions that capture the essence of a specific year, offering a unique expression of terroir and the savoir-faire of the Champagne Houses.
