Description

Characteristics and Tasting Notes for the Nikka Miyagikyo Single Malt 10 Years Old

Tasting

Colour
A seductive hue of deep gold, shading into a light golden amber, reflecting the rich influence of its ageing in bourbon and sherry casks.

Nose
The aromatic bouquet unfolds with great complexity, dominated by aromas of stone fruit, sweet green apple, pear and banana, enhanced by touches of cherry blossom and red berries. Indulgent notes of honey and burnt honey intertwine with subtle floral and musky nuances, likely inherited from the mizunara oak. Light spices (cocoa, vanilla) and an almost imperceptible hint of smoke round off this delicate nose.

Palate
The palate opens with a honeyed, caramelised sweetness, carried by the influences of malt and sherry. This indulgence gives way to a lovely fruity dimension, where pear, apple and citrus come through. On the mid-palate, a subtle spiced thread (cinnamon, nutmeg, white pepper) brings warmth and structure, supported by light, silky tannins. The finish, with a pleasing length, evolves from spice towards a residual fruity sweetness, accompanied by a very discreet note of smoke and tobacco leaf.

Food Pairing Tips and Tasting Moments
This whisky of great finesse is best enjoyed neat, at a slightly cool room temperature (between 14 and 18°C), in a glass suited to allowing good aeration. It can also be savoured with a splash of water or a slowly melting ice cube, following the Japanese tradition of "mizuwari". Perfect for a meditative late-evening tasting, it pairs beautifully with delicate dishes: fresh sea urchin with shiso, Japanese kaiseki cuisine, subtle clear-broth dishes or creamy soft-ripened cheeses.

Mixology
Although this exceptional spirit expresses itself most authentically neat, it lends itself elegantly to minimalist Japanese preparations. The "highball" (one part whisky to three parts sparkling water over ice) enhances its fruity and floral notes while adding lightness. The "mizuwari" (lengthened with still water over ice) also offers a refreshing approach. Mixologists, however, advise against overly elaborate cocktails, which risk masking its delicate nuances.

Other Characteristics
This single malt is bottled at 45% ABV, an ideal strength offering a fine balance without alcoholic dominance. Unlike the robust character of the Yoichi distillery, it stands out for its almost complete absence of peat, offering a profile firmly focused on elegance, roundness and fruity finesse.

A Japanese Single Malt of Great Elegance by Nikka

Nikka: Scottish Heritage in the Service of Japanese Whisky
Founded in 1934 by the visionary Masataka Taketsuru, the Nikka house embodies the perfect alliance between authentic Scottish tradition and Japanese excellence. After training in Scotland, Taketsuru established his distilleries in rigorously selected environments: Yoichi on the island of Hokkaido for its maritime climate, and Miyagikyo near Sendai for its lush nature and exceptionally pure water. The production facilities stand out for their preservation of traditional methods, such as direct coal firing or the use of Coffey stills. Deeply committed to harmony with nature, the brand produces a Japanese Whisky of rare complexity, the fruit of a unique blending expertise. Today, while operating with great creative autonomy, Nikka has been owned by the Asahi Holdings group since 1954, allowing it to continue its international expansion while preserving its prestigious identity.

Miyagikyo Single Malt 10 Years Old: The Fruity and Floral Expression of Sendai
The Miyagikyo Single Malt 10 Years Old holds a special place in the contemporary history of Japanese spirits. Crafted exclusively from malted barley sourced from the Miyagikyo distillery, located in the lush Sendai valley, this Whisky stands out for its specific production methods. Unlike the stills at Yoichi, those at Miyagikyo use indirect steam heating and benefit from extended fermentation times. Their bulbous necks and rising arms encourage the concentration of fruity esters, giving rise to a remarkably light distillate.

This Single Malt is aged predominantly in bourbon casks, which give it its soft notes of vanilla and honey, complemented by sherry casks that bring lovely fruity and spicy depth. The occasional use of Japanese white oak casks, known as mizunara, rounds off this blend by lending it delicate floral touches.

A victim of its worldwide success and the growing scarcity of aged stocks, this age-stated expression was withdrawn from the market in 2015 in favour of non-age-statement versions. Its recent reintroduction delights enthusiasts and collectors alike, testifying to the distillery's resolution of its supply challenges. This long-awaited return celebrates the house's resilience and its commitment to authenticity and premium quality.
