Description
Tasting notes and recommendations for the Benromach 16 Years Old 1st Fill Super Toscan Itinéraires 2009
Tasting
Nose
The nose unveils aromas of black fruits (grape, blackberry, blueberry), lemon and acacia honey, intertwined with coconut milk, peppermint and white flowers. One can also detect peppery notes, ashes, candied pear and fig, underpinned by a strongly malted profile with hints of cocoa, coffee, old wood and earth.
Palate
The palate is malty, smoky, peppery and spicy. It reveals medicinal notes, lemon, white fruits (pear, peach), vanilla, coconut milk and fresh nuts. A harmony of bitter orange, raspberry and an oily herbaceous peat fully expresses itself. The finish is long, complex, floral and cereal-driven, marked by green notes (barley, alfalfa) and spicy oak.
Food pairings and tasting moments
This single malt is, above all, a whisky for contemplation. It is best enjoyed neat, on its own, or perhaps with a light dash of water to fully release its aromatic complexity.
Mixology
As this is an exceptional product from a very limited edition, it is strongly recommended to drink it without any embellishment. It is not suited to the preparation of cocktails.
Other characteristics
This single malt is moderately peated (around 12 ppm). It is bottled at 58.2% vol., a strength close to cask strength, and is presented in a gift box.
An exceptional Scotch Whisky, rich and delicately peated
The Benromach distillery: the soul of traditional Scotch Whisky
Founded in 1898 in Forres, in the Speyside region, the Benromach distillery is renowned for its delicately peated style, inspired by the 1950s and 1960s. Acquired in 1993 and relaunched in 1998 by the merchant Gordon & MacPhail, it still belongs to the Urquhart family, with Richard Urquhart at its helm. This Benromach Whisky stands out for its small-scale, artisanal production, orchestrated by a small team of distillers who oversee every stage by hand. Using the pure water of the Chapelton Springs and barley sourced exclusively from Scotland, the estate favours maturation in first-fill casks. This authentic approach makes it possible to offer single malts with a malty, fruity and subtly smoky character, faithful to the region's historic heritage.
The limited edition 16 Years Old 1st Fill Super Toscan Itinéraires 2009
The 16 Years Old 1st Fill Super Toscan Itinéraires 2009 is an exceptionally rare single malt, specifically selected for La Maison du Whisky's "Itinéraires" collection. Distilled in 2009, this spirit benefited from a full sixteen-year maturation in a first-fill Italian red wine cask of the "Super Toscan" type. This highly active cask choice lends the base distillate, traditionally malty and lightly peated, a remarkable oenological dimension, rich in tannins and black fruit notes.
This is an extremely limited edition, drawn from a single cask (single cask number 582). Bottled at a powerful natural strength of 58.2% vol., this Benromach Whisky is presented in an elegant gift box. This Scotch whisky perfectly illustrates the distillery's expertise in handling atypical maturations, offering a bold encounter between the delicate smoke of Speyside and the aromatic power of a great Tuscan red wine.
