Decanter

Succulent and just a little austere in terms of texture, with nicely spiced edges and plush blackcurrant fruit on the mid-palate. This certainly doesn’t lack any depth or weight, with good direction all the way through. Really pure fruit, offering clarity, juiciness and succulence with the Petit Verdot spice, not to mention a rigid backbone. Great freshness. The suppleness and the slightly bitter tannins work really well and are a good sign of things to come. 2% Cabernet Franc completes the blend.

Falstaff

Falstaff

Dark garnet, purple rim. Delicate floral aromas lie beneath blackberry fruit, notes of fresh herbs, a mineral touch. Light-footed, subtle red berry fruit, discreet tannins, a salty-mineral finish, a fine leafy note on the aftertaste; versatile.

Vertdevin

The nose is fruity and offers a touch of concentration, racy minerality, fine grain, subtle power, and an enticing/velvety edge. It reveals notes of pulpy blackcurrant, fresh/pulpy wild blackberry and, more slightly, fleshy raspberry, combined with hints of violet, racy minerality, a discreet hint of licorice, fresh blond tobacco, and a subtle touch of vanilla. The palate is fruity, fresh, mineral and offers smoothness, harmony, a lovely mineral framework, and pure fruit. On the palate, this wine expresses notes of pulpy/juicy raspberry, juicy cherry and, more slightly, pulpy/fresh blackcurrant, combined with hints of violet, lily, racy/iodized minerality, as well as small touches of vibrant blue plum, a subtle hint of Cuben pepper, toast, and vanilla. The tannins are supple, fresh, and suave.

Neal Martin

Bottled in May 2023, the 2021 Sarget de Gruaud Larose has a perfumed bouquet with blackberry, raspberry and light rose petal scents, a little pastille-like in style. There’s fine delineation and more purity than other vintages of this second wine. The palate is medium-bodied with slightly chalky tannins at the moment, though that is because of its proximity to bottling and will soften with time. It attenuates a little on the finish, but it will still provide a decade’s worth of drinking pleasure.

Description

A well-balanced and complex Second Wine from Saint-Julien

The estate

A historical reference of the Saint-Julien appellation, Château Gruaud Larose was founded in 1757, when different estates merged. The property received its current name when the heir of Joseph Gruaud added "Larose" to his name, thus becoming Château Gruaud Larose. Acquired by the Merlaut family in 1997, Château Gruaud Larose embodies the excellence of the fine Saint-Julien red wines and seduces lovers of the appellation with its signature style.

The vineyard

Château Gruaud Larose 2021 is a Saint-Julien wine that stems from an 82-hectare vineyard. The vines are 46 years old on average and are planted on Garonne gravel soils, which were deposited over 600,000 years ago. Converting to organic farming since the 2019 vintage, the vineyard of Château Gruaud Larose is managed according to the principles of organic and biodynamic viticulture.

The wine

Sarget de Gruaud Larose is the Second Wine of the estate.

The vintage

Although the mild, wet winter favoured an early, even budburst, frosts in April affected some Merlot plots. The lack of sunshine and the dampness of spring slowed down the development of the vine. The milder conditions at the beginning of June ensured that a good-quality flowering period, with the exception of some run-off on certain Merlot vines. The weather was unstable and variable from the time the grapes set (mid-June) until the end of the veraison at the beginning of August. The very good conditions recorded from mid-August until the harvest were ideal and helped to accelarate the ripening process. The grapes harvested from September 23rd to October 7th revealed a pleasant freshness and tension that resonate with great historic vintages.

Vinification and ageing

Plot-based vinification, 50% in cement and 40% in thermo-regulated wooden vats. Yeasting and alcoholic fermentation at 24-26°C. Maceration for 20 to 30 days. 3 vertical presses. Placed into barrels at pressing. Malolactic fermentation carried out alongside alcoholic fermentation thanks to co-inoculation. Ageing lasts for at least 14 months in French oak barrels (15% new, 85% in one-year-old barrels).

The blend

Sarget de Gruaud Larose 2021 comprises a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon (52%), Merlot (40%), Petit Verdot (6%) and Cabernet Franc (2%).
