Penfolds certainly has a place apart and each vintage unveiled is an event in the world of wine. When this brand arouses so much interest, it is above all for the quality and the regularity of its vintages. This is especially true for Magill Estate, a particular label for Penfolds, which goes back to the vineyards where everything started in 1844. The vintage varietal Syrah (Shiraz) was born in 1983 with the aim of proposing a very elegant vision of the Australian Shiraz.
The 2015 vintage is marked by warmer than average weather conditions and little rainfall in the region. The sanitary conditions were pristine and after manual harvest, fermentation started in open tanks and then completed in barrels. The Magill Estate Shiraz 2015 Penfolds was aged 18 months in new oak barrels with 70% in French ones and 30% in American ones.
The result is a wine of great depth, marked by aromas typical of Syrah with spices like black pepper, star anise and bay leaf. On the palate, the mouthfeel is quite dense and fruity with plum and blackberry hints. The balance is superb with a freshness well present despite the hot conditions of the vintage. The oak from ageing is also well balanced and offers relief from the wine’s fine tannins. This wine can be kept until around 2032.
