Robert Parker

Robert M. Parker, Jr.

The light, fresh, sensual, round 2006 Pavillon Rouge du Chateau Margaux exhibits moderate levels of dark cherry and red currant fruit, accompanied by background herb and spice characteristics. Drink it over the next 5–7 years.

Wine Spectator

Tight and solid, with currant, raspberry and light tobacco. Full-bodied, chewy and fruity. Closed and slightly hollow. Best after 2014.

Light aromas of cherry blossom, earth and kirsch draw you to this medium-bodied, elegant, finesse-driven red berry wine. This is ready for prime-time drinking.

René Gabriel

Bright garnet-purple. Peppery bouquet, red currants, rose tones, refreshing. On the palate, very fine and creamy, showing a charming texture and ripe tannins; on the finish, red plum skins, subtle bitterness, which is still obviously from the press wine, with lovely length.

Wine Enthusiast

Roger Voss

Delicate and elegant wine, with smoky fruit, ripe but freshened with a tight layer of acidity. It has delicious black currant juice flavors, but the texture remains light and the tannins soft.

Description

A Balanced and Lively Second Red Wine from Margaux

The estate

With origins dating back to the 12th century, the Château Margaux is one of those Grand Crus that have built the legend of the great wines of Bordeaux around the world. The château was awarded the title of Premier Grand Cru Classé in 1855 and was the only one of the four châteaux presented to have obtained a score of twenty out of twenty. With the acquisition of the estate in 1977 by André Mentzelopoulos, Château Margaux wrote a new page in its history. Elevating the Grand Vin of Château Margaux to the highest level, he reintroduced the Second Wine of the château, the Pavillon Rouge of Château Margaux, initiated in 1908. Following in her father's footsteps due to his premature death, Corinne Mentzelopoulos took up the family banner with energy and passion to maintain the rank of Château Margaux, which has become a Bordeaux masterpiece, so recognizable by its neo-Palladian style. Vintage after vintage, the estate's wines are among the greatest wines in the world.

The vineyard

The Château Margaux vineyard owes its uniqueness to its rare and unique terroir, located on a gravel mound. The estate's grape variety gives pride of place to the flagship black grape of the area, the cabernet sauvignon, not forgetting the merlot, the petit verdot and the cabernet franc. The clay-limestone soils of the estate give birth to legendary wines, with a sleek and sensual style, so representative of the Margaux appellation. This vintage is composed of just over half of the harvest.

The vintage

The 2006 vintage was marked by a cold winter followed by a very dry spring, raising concerns about the lack of water, although the great terroirs were able to adapt. However, a frost in April impacted the yields of the Pavillon Blanc. The flowering took place under excellent conditions, announcing a red harvest of moderate quantity. The summer, scorching in July and then cooler in August, was particularly dry, while September, alternating heat and humidity, allowed for serene harvests, reminiscent of the 1996 scenario.

Blend

Cabernet sauvignon, merlot, petit verdot, cabernet franc.
