A barrel sample of the 2015 Harlan Estate promises to be a replay of the rather exotic, enormously fruity, exhilarating and decadent 2002 Harlan Estate. It has incredible sucrosity, richness, and that blackberry liqueur-like fruit intermixed with camphor and graphite. The wealth of fruit and glycerin in this full-bodied wine is mind-boggling, and it is actually probably going to be drinkable well before the slower maturing 2013. The Maiden, which essentially comes from lots culled from the Harlan Estate, is largely, like its bigger siblings, nearly all Cabernet Sauvignon with just a touch of Petit Verdot and Merlot. The 2014 The Maiden exhibits the vintage's terrific fruit-forwardness, silky tannins, and plump, succulent personality. It is a wine of considerable intensity, lushness and appeal. The easygoing nature of this vintage belies some serious concentration behind the charm and appeal, but that is why most people love the wine. California - Napa Valley - Red - More Info- Parker : 94

The 2014 Harlan Estate is primarily Cabernet Sauvignon aged a minimum of 24 months in mostly new oak. It displays sweet graphite notes, some mulberry, blackberry and cassis, and touches of scorched earth and hot rocks, which always vaguely suggest something from the Northern Graves region of Bordeaux. However, it has a Pauillac-like structure, density and opulence. This is a wine of terrific fruit intensity and a vintage that's very forward by Harlan Estate's standards and already delicious to drink. It's hard to compare to another vintage of Harlan, given its precociousness and already flattering style. Drink it over the next 25 years. California - Napa Valley - Red - More Info- Parker : 96

Its bigger brother, or sister, depending on the point of view, is the extremely young, fresh, vigorous, yet still exuberant and promising 2005 Harlan Estate. Normally, the blends on these wines tend to be 85%-90% Cabernet Sauvignon and the rest tiny proportions of Cabernet Franc, Merlot and possibly some Petit Verdot, although I don't recall that being a very important part of the estate vineyard. The 2005 is incredibly youthful at age ten, although certainly drinkable. And who wouldn't consume it if they had the opportunity? It will benefit from another 5-10 years of cellaring and certainly has 30 or more years left in its evolutionary curve. Gorgeous, and tasting akin to a hypothetical Pauillac blended with a great Pessac-Léognan from Bordeaux comes to mind because of the smoky, subtle barbecue notes, fruitcake, forest floor, graphite and minerality. The wine has stunning fruit and a full-bodied, powerful richness, yet is still nimble on its feet. This is a classic Napa Cabernet Sauvignon from an absolutely magnificent hillside vineyard in the Mayacamas Mountains overlooking the Oakville corridor on the valley floor. This opaque, garnet/purple wine is another tour de force and, once again, proves that Harlan Estate is not only one of the greatest wines of California, but of the world. The 2006 Harlan Estate has turned out better than I originally predicted. Its dense ruby/purple color is followed by classic aromas of creme de cassis, melted licorice, smoked meats, burning embers, and graphite. It has thrown off some of the tannic clout it displayed last year, revealing great balance. A candidate for "wine of the vintage," this dense, full-bodied effort has 25+ years of life ahead of it. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2035. California - Napa Valley - Red - 14.5° - More Info- Parker : 96

Another perfect wine from Ann Colgin and her winemaking team is the 2013 IX Proprietary Red Estate, a blend of 68% Cabernet Sauvignon, 14% Merlot, 10% Cabernet Franc and 8% Petit Verdot. An absolutely compelling wine, with notes of lead pencil shavings, spring flowers, blueberry, blackberry and cassis, it has the full smorgasbord of black and blue fruits, wonderfully integrated, toasty oak, acidity and tannin, a floral note that is unmistakable, and great richness, density and purity. It is an utterly exceptional wine and a tribute to not only a great vineyard, but impeccable winemaking and upbringing. It should drink well for 30+ years as well. Again, these wines are not meant for near-term gratification, so 5-6 years of cellaring is warranted. This is another 30-year wine from Bond.

Emerging from an 11-acre vineyard just north of the Oakville tenderloin sector of Napa Valley is the St. Eden, which is treated identically to the other wines. Like the other sites, Bill Harlan has a 25-year lease on this single vineyard, which is planted on fractured, iron-rich, volcanic rock, as opposed to the white tufa volcanic ash of the Quella Vineyard. The 2014 St. Eden is a dead ringer for a Pauillac such as Lynch Bages or Pichon-Longueville Baron. Loads of cedar wood, Christmas fruitcake, blackcurrants, licorice and underbrush all jump from the glass of this deep, rich, concentrated and complex wine that is already showing secondary nuances and silky tannins. It can be drunk now or cellared for up to another 25-30+ years. California - Napa Valley - Red - More Info- Parker : 96

The 2014 Quella, which comes from a steep nine-acre vineyard in the eastern Vaca Mountain foothills, has an even deeper color than the St. Eden for the 2014 vintage. Beautiful charcoal, vanilla and cassis notes, some lead pencil shavings, supple tannin, and again, the plump, succulent fruit of this vintage are all displayed abundantly and flamboyantly. Drink it over the next 20-25 years. California - Napa Valley - Red - More Info- Parker : 95

As for the single-vineyard wines, the seven-acre hillside vineyard called Melbury is 100% Cabernet Sauvignon (as are all its siblings). The wine is aged for a minimum of two years in mostly new oak, then bottled unfiltered. From this property which overlooks Lake Hennessey, the 2014 Melbury displays beautiful blueberry and dark raspberry fruit, an opaque blue/purple color, and the endearing suppleness and lushness that are key characteristics of this vintage. It has fabulous fruit on the attack and mid-palate and a long, supple finish. This sexy wine should drink well for 20-25 years. California - Napa Valley - Red - More Info- Parker : 95

Lastly, the Pluribus comes from a seven-acre parcel on Spring Mountain (the most northerly of the Bond Estates). The 2014 Pluribus displays beautiful, cool-climate black raspberry and blueberry fruits as well as hints of violets and earth. It is full-bodied, rich, concentrated, and stunningly proportioned, with light tannin but an incredibly long finish. It should drink well for 30-35 years. A nearby neighbor to Bill Harlan's Harlan Estate, the Vecina is another 11-acre vineyard sitting on the Mayacamas mountainsides with an east-facing exposition. This is pure, pebbly, alluvial soils over fractured bedrock. The 2014 Vecina does recall Harlan Estate in its masculine, earthy, highly structured, tannic, and big, spicy, rich style. It is not as polished as Harlan Estate, and the tannins seem a little grippy, which is somewhat surprising for a 2014, but the wine has fabulous fruit on the attack and should soften with another 3-5 years of bottle age. It is definitely a 30-year wine. California - Napa Valley - Red - More Info- Parker : 94+
