Description
A Vintage Port from the Duriense by Niepoort, Made from Old Vines
The Estate
Founded in 1842 in Vila Nova de Gaia by Franciscus Marius Niepoort, a merchant of Dutch origin, the House of Niepoort began as a Port shipper. It acquired its first quintas in the Duriense (Douro) region from 1987 onwards, starting with Quinta de Nápoles, under the leadership of Dirk Niepoort, a fifth-generation family member. An independent family business, it is run by Dirk Niepoort, with the involvement of members of the sixth generation. This Portuguese house cultivates organic vines at Nápoles and Carril, and has also established itself in Bairrada, Dão and Vinho Verde. It champions old vines and minimal-intervention winemaking.
The Vineyard
This Port comes from very old vines in the Duriense region, spread across several plots. They include numerous varieties, planted together in keeping with the region's tradition of mixed-planted vineyards. This mosaic of old plots is the foundation of the blend's complexity.
Winemaking and Ageing
The Niepoort Vintage Port 2024 is vinified at Vale de Mendiz, the house's Port winemaking centre. The grapes are vinified entirely as whole bunches, foot-trodden in granite lagares. The must is then fortified with the addition of aguardente, which halts fermentation and preserves a portion of the natural sugars.
Grape Varieties
The blend of this Niepoort Vintage Port 2024 brings together a great many varieties from old vines.
