Description
Characteristics and tasting notes of Mas de Daumas Gassac 2023 red
Tasting notes
Appearance
The wine displays a dark, dense hue, adorned with deep reflections ranging from ruby to garnet.
Nose
The nose opens with a rich array of ripe black fruits, such as blackberry and blackcurrant. With aeration, it reveals a beautiful complexity through notes of spices, garrigue, along with subtle hints of cedar and graphite.
Palate
The palate offers a full-bodied, energetic structure, supported by an assertive yet ripe tannic framework. The balance is remarkable thanks to a lovely freshness, leading to a long finish marked by aromas of black fruits, spices and delicate smoky or woody notes.
Food and wine pairings
This red wine pairs wonderfully with characterful meats, such as braised beef cheek, duck breast or herb-roasted lamb. It will also enhance dishes in sauce, lightly spiced fare, as well as aged hard or blue-veined cheeses.
Serving and cellaring
To fully appreciate Mas de Daumas Gassac 2023 in its youth, generous decanting is recommended before serving it at a temperature between 16 and 18°C. Endowed with great potential, this cellaring wine can evolve in the cellar for around ten years, or even longer, developing complex tertiary aromas.
The power and freshness of a great Languedoc red wine by Mas de Daumas Gassac
The estate
Located in the heart of the Languedoc, Mas de Daumas Gassac is a pioneering estate whose official creation dates back to the 1970s, driven by Aimé and Véronique Guibert. Today, the property is run by the second generation, represented by the sons of the Guibert family. This vineyard of approximately 50 hectares stands out for its unique layout in small clearings within a vast Mediterranean forest. Recognised worldwide, the estate cultivates its distinctiveness by favouring artisanal viticulture, free from chemical inputs, elevating its cuvées to the rank of the greatest French wines.
The vineyard
This Languedoc wine comes from vines planted on rare, deep glacial scree soils, particularly poor and well-drained. Surrounded by forest and garrigue, the plots benefit from rich biodiversity and an exceptional microclimate, cooled by the nocturnal winds descending from the Larzac plateau. The vines are tended with the utmost respect for the environment, with low yields and entirely manual harvests.
The vintage
The 2023 vintage was marked by demanding regional weather conditions, with significant heat and drought in the Languedoc. However, the particularly cool microclimate of the Haute Vallée du Gassac played a crucial protective role, allowing the vines to avoid extreme water stress and overripeness, thereby ensuring grapes of remarkable balance and freshness.
Winemaking and ageing
The production of this wine is based on traditional, artisanal methods. After rigorous sorting, the grapes undergo relatively long macerations to extract colour and tannic structure. The wine then benefits from careful ageing in barrels, designed to soften the tannins and subtly integrate the oaky notes without ever masking the brilliance of the fruit or the pure expression of its terroir.
Grape varieties
This wine comes from a blend dominated by Cabernet Sauvignon, complemented by other grape varieties carefully selected by the estate.
