Vinous

Nicolas Greinacher

Checking in at a mere 12.5% alcohol, the 2023 Châteauneuf-du-Pape Serus is a single-variety Syrah, vinified from certified biodynamic grapes as usual. Orange rind, blackberry, black olive and fleshy tones come alive. Medium-bodied, round and refreshing, the 2023 is constructed on smooth tannins and caps off with a reasonably long farewell.

Serus is the new Cuvee from Chapoutier that is produced from 100% Sryah. Deep in color, the wine is dark, spicy, chewy, long, meaty, peppery and spicy. It seems to be more of a masculine styled wine with a chewy character. It will be interesting to see how this develops over the next decade. Drink from 2030-2042.

Tasting

Color
The color features a ruby-purple hue with violet highlights.

Nose

The Smoothness and Precision of a 100% Syrah from the Rhône Valley

The Estate
Founded in 1808 in Tain-l'Hermitage in the Rhône Valley, Maison M. Chapoutier today extends its influence across prestigious appellations and owns estates in Portugal, Australia and Spain. Under the leadership of Michel Chapoutier since the 1980s, joined by his daughter Mathilde in 2017, this family estate has stood out for its full conversion to biodynamics as early as 1991 and its Braille labels since 1996.

The Vineyard
"Serus" is a Châteauneuf-du-Pape wine made from a selection of terroirs (lieux-dits Font de Michel, Les Grandes Cerfs Ouest and Barbe d'Ane) based on various geological formations such as molassic sands and alluvial terraces of rolled pebbles.

Winemaking and Aging
The grapes are hand-harvested. Vinification is carried out with 50% whole clusters in concrete vats, followed by 12 months of aging in demi-muids and oak barrels.

Grape Variety
100% Syrah.
