Decanter

You can detect the 35% whole bunch on the nose, there's an attractive herbal, floral note. Only medium-bodied, this is very fresh, with good acidity, a sense of finesse, with length and tension. The tannins are just a little grainy, fibrous on the tip of the tongue, again likely from stems, and this should dissipate in time. It feels like a very traditional, savory expression, slightly old-fashioned even, in a good way. Less impacted by coulure here in 2024, so there was a reasonable yield – 20 hl/ha – from the 70-80-year-old vines.

Description

The refinement and complexity of a red wine from the Rhône Valley

The estate

Established since 1808 in Tain-L’Hermitage, the M. Chapoutier House today embodies the elite of the greatest names in Rhône Valley wines.

Vinegrower and merchant, Michel Chapoutier has managed over the vintages to lead this family business to the top. The wines of Maison Chapoutier are recognized for their refinement and high quality by the finest connoisseurs beyond borders. A man of many hats, Michel Chapoutier holds the world record for 100/100 scores awarded by American critic Robert Parker. Mathilde, Michel Chapoutier's daughter, has taken up the torch of this iconic house, overseeing a vineyard of over 350 hectares across the most prestigious appellations of the northern and southern Rhône Valley.

The vineyard

The Mordorée from M. Chapoutier is a Côte-Rôtie wine made from old Syrah vines. Located on the edge of the Côte blonde, this plot is planted on soils composed of chloritic and ferruginous micaschists. The vineyard is certified in biodynamics and organic farming.

Vinification and aging

Harvested at full maturity, the grapes are vinified in concrete vats, with daily pump-overs allowing optimal extraction of color and tannins. Only the runoff juice is used, guaranteeing purity and concentration. The aging, lasting 14 to 18 months, takes place in 225-liter barrels.
