Description
Characteristics and tasting notes for the Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru 2025 by Jean Chartron
Tasting
Colour
The wine displays a pale, brilliant gold hue with subtle green tints in its youth.
Nose
The aromatic bouquet opens with floral notes of honeysuckle and linden blossom, mingled with aromas of white-fleshed fruit and citrus. Barrel ageing brings delicate hints of brioche, hazelnut and vanilla, underpinned by a chalky mineral backbone.
Palate
The attack is dense and reveals a powerful body. The broad, slightly unctuous texture is perfectly balanced by lively acidity. The long, saline finish shows fine mineral tension.
Food and wine pairing
This white wine pairs beautifully with noble fish in cream sauce, such as turbot or sea bass, as well as with shellfish like lobster. It is also a superb match for chicken with cream and mushrooms, or for aged hard cheeses such as Comté.
Serving and cellaring
With remarkable ageing potential, this Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru 2025 can be cellared and enjoyed until around 2040.
The precision and richness of a great white Burgundy
The estate
Based in Puligny-Montrachet in Burgundy, Domaine Jean Chartron traces its winegrowing roots back to 1859, although the current estate was officially established in 1984. Today, it is run by Jean-Michel Chartron, the fifth generation of the family, with the support of his sister Anne-Laure. The vineyard covers around 14.5 hectares and stands out for its ownership of several prestigious monopoles. Farmed according to the principles of sustainable, though uncertified, viticulture, the estate is renowned for the consistency and quality of its white wines.
The vineyard
The family's Corton-Charlemagne plot covers a mere 12 ares. Located on the hill of Corton, on the Pernand-Vergelesses side, the vines enjoy a south-easterly exposure. Around 60 years old, they thrive on well-drained clay-limestone soils. The vineyard is carefully tended with natural grass cover, manual soil work and Poussard pruning, in an environmentally respectful approach.
The vintage
The 2025 vintage in Burgundy is described as a well-balanced year. The weather conditions combined good grape concentration with remarkable freshness, allowing the fruit to reach full ripeness.
Winemaking and ageing
After hand harvesting and rigorous sorting, the grapes for this Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru 2025 are pressed and the must is settled. Alcoholic fermentation takes place in oak barrels, around 30% of which are new. The wine is then aged on fine lees for 14 months in barrel, followed by 4 months in tank to stabilise and harmonise the blend before bottling.
Grape variety
This wine is made from 100% Chardonnay.
