Decanter

This solid, satisfying wine boasts ripe pear, apricot and quince aromas, with hints of hawthorn, butter and spice. The texture is almost massive, perhaps a touch four-square, but it should gain in elegance as it ages in bottle. The grapes come from a trade with a friend in Pernand; they are gently pressed and fermented in cask (30% new), where they will remain for 14 months, followed by another four in tank. This majestic wine will open with time; give it seven years before opening, and drink over the next 30.

Description

Characteristics and tasting notes for the Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru 2023 by Jean Chartron

Tasting notes

Colour
This white wine from France reveals a pale yellow hue illuminated by delicate green highlights.

Nose
Complex and subtle, the aromatic bouquet exudes scents of white fruits such as apple and pear, enhanced by a touch of lime. Mineral notes of flint intertwine harmoniously with indulgent aromas of fresh butter, whipped cream and fresh hazelnut.

Palate
The palate offers a remarkable balance between rich density and a crisp, citrus-like acidity. The lively texture rests on a pronounced mineral structure that extends the tasting experience towards a striking finish, marked by sweet spices and a rocky minerality.

Food and wine pairing

This grand cru pairs wonderfully with delicate and flavourful dishes such as foie gras or noble shellfish like lobster and langoustine. It also pairs perfectly with fine fish in a beurre blanc sauce, Bresse poultry with morels, veal sweetbreads, or aged cheeses such as a mature Comté.

Service and storage

For an optimal tasting experience of the Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru 2023, it is recommended to serve it at a temperature between 12 and 14°C. Decanting for one to two hours before serving is recommended to fully release its complexity. This wine can be enjoyed after a few years of cellaring and will continue to evolve favourably until around 2035.

The elegance and minerality of a great white Burgundy

The estate

Founded in 1859 by Jean-Édouard Dupard, the Jean Chartron estate has established itself as a key figure in Puligny-Montrachet, in Burgundy. Historically involved in local life, the family has seen four of its generations serve as mayor of the village. Today, the estate is run by the fifth generation: Jean-Michel Chartron, who oversees winemaking, and his sister Anne-Laure, who manages the 14.5 hectares of vines. The estate stands out for its environmentally respectful approach and its ownership of three exclusive monopole plots.

The vineyard

The grapes destined for the Corton-Charlemagne come from vines planted on steep slopes, with gradients of 20 to 23%, at altitudes ranging from 280 to 330 metres. Remarkably for the region, these plots benefit from an ideal south-west exposure for ripening. The clay-limestone soils, rich in grey marl, give the wine its mineral identity. The vineyard is cultivated using organic methods, without the use of synthetic products, favouring soil work through scarifying and the use of natural compost.

The vintage

2023 stands out for its particularly warm temperatures throughout the growing season. Despite this intense summer climate, the harvest, carried out early in mid-September, helped preserve excellent natural freshness. The harvested berries thus display a perfectly balanced profile, retaining the energy and tension typical of their terroir of origin.

Winemaking and aging

Fermentation of the Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru 2023 takes place in oak barrels, 30% of which are new, with the remainder having previously held one to five wines. Aging then continues on fine lees for 14 months, adding complexity and richness. Finally, the wine rests in tank for an additional four months before bottling.
