Decanter

Weighty but not heavy, the Chartron Bâtard opens with ripe apple aromas abundantly shaded with hints of spice, honey, and cream. The texture is dense and concentrated; some may find it a bit rich, especially after the crystalline purity of the wines further up the slope, but it will undoubtedly please true lovers of the appellation. Chartron farms 0.12 hectares of 60-year-old vines on the Chassagne side; the 2022 is still slightly closed for now, but in five years it should begin to open and drink well for decades.

Vinous

Neal Martin

The 2022 Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru has a nuanced, captivating nose: white peach, vervain and crushed stone, tightly wound at first though it opens beautifully in the glass. The palate is very well balanced. There is real intensity in this Bâtard-Montrachet, driving acidity, sapid with a touch of blood orange and quince jus towards the penetrating finish. Outstanding. Tasted blind at the annual Burgfest tasting.

Description

Characteristics and tasting notes for Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru 2022 Jean Chartron

Tasting

Colour
The colour reveals a golden emerald hue, likely to evolve towards deep amber nuances over time.

Nose
The aromatic bouquet opens with notes of ripe apple, citrus fruit and stone fruit, subtly enhanced by touches of spice, honey, cream and elegant floral nuances.

Palate
Dense and concentrated, the palate offers a rich texture and remarkable volume without any heaviness. Supported by a fine acid backbone that preserves its freshness, it stretches into a long finish marked by a mineral and saline signature.

Food and wine pairing

This great white wine beautifully complements refined dishes such as pan-seared foie gras or foie gras terrine, noble shellfish like lobster and crayfish, or monkfish. It also pairs wonderfully with free-range poultry in a creamy mushroom sauce, veal-based preparations, as well as dishes flavoured with saffron or truffle.

Service and storage

To reveal its full complexity, it is recommended to decant this Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru 2022 between thirty and sixty minutes before serving it at a temperature between 12 and 14°C. This vintage, built for ageing, can be left to rest in the cellar and enjoyed until around 2035.

The masterful expression of a great white Burgundy Grand Cru

The estate

Founded in 1859 by master cooper Jean-Edouard Dupard, the Jean Chartron estate stands as a historic figure of Burgundy. Now run by the fifth generation, embodied by siblings Jean-Michel and Anne-Laure Chartron, the estate oversees a vineyard of around 14.5 hectares spread across the most prestigious terroirs of the Côte de Beaune. Certified for its rigorous environmental practices, the estate stands out for its specialisation in crafting great white wines, expressing with remarkable precision all the complexity of Burgundy's climats.

The vineyard

This Bâtard-Montrachet terroir lies on a small 0.12-hectare plot located on the Chassagne-Montrachet slope. Facing east to capture the morning light, the sixty-year-old vines thrive at an altitude of between 240 and 250 metres. At this point on the hillside, the soils prove deep, made up of brown limestone and a high proportion of clay, giving the grapes remarkable concentration while maintaining consistent hydration throughout the growing cycle.

The vintage

The year 2022 began with a spring marked by a few frost episodes in April, though their impact remained moderate. The growing cycle continued under mild weather conditions, characterised by moderate rainfall and above-average seasonal temperatures. This vintage stands out in particular for its record sunshine, encouraging optimal berry ripeness while preserving the natural acidity essential to the balance of the musts.

Winemaking and ageing

The whole-bunch harvest undergoes slow pneumatic pressing lasting around two and a half hours. After around twelve hours of cold settling, the juices of this Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru 2022 are transferred directly into barrels along with their fine lees. Alcoholic and malolactic fermentations take place in oak barrels, with 10 to 30% new wood sourced from the forests of Allier and Centre-France, at a controlled temperature of 17°C. Ageing then continues in cool cellars for twelve to eighteen months, followed by light filtration and bottling timed according to the lunar calendar.
