Characteristics and tasting tips for the Santenay Village "Sous la Roche" 2022 by Jean-Charles Fagot
Tasting
Colour
The wine shows a pale gold hue with green highlights, a promise of lovely freshness.
Nose
The aromatic bouquet blends citrus scents such as lemon and grapefruit with notes of white-fleshed fruit like apple and pear. Delicate floral and mineral touches intertwine with subtle buttery and hazelnut nuances from the ageing.
Palate
The attack is lively and fresh, supported by a crisp acidic backbone. The texture is silky and well balanced, then stretches out into a long, deeply mineral finish.
Food and wine pairings
This white wine pairs beautifully with white fish in a creamy sauce, poultry with cream and mushrooms, or shellfish such as pan-seared scallops. It is also a wonderful match for hard cooked cheeses such as Comté or Beaufort.
Serving and cellaring
This Santenay Village "Sous la Roche" 2022 can be enjoyed now, but it also has the ageing potential to be cellared until around 2030.
The elegance and minerality of a white wine from Santenay
The estate
A third-generation winegrower, Jean-Charles Fagot founded his own estate in 1989 in Corpeau, in the heart of Burgundy. Still at the helm today, he farms 3 to 4 hectares of vines while also working as a négociant-éleveur. A well-known local figure, he also opened his own restaurant in 1998. The Jean-Charles Fagot estate stands out for its environmentally conscious approach based on sustainable viticulture and its commitment to overseeing every stage of its wines' ageing, delivering an authentic expression of the Côte de Beaune terroirs.
The vineyard
This cuvée comes from the "Sous la Roche" climat, located high up on the hillside of the Santenay appellation. This terroir enjoys an ideal south-facing exposure. The vines thrive on shallow, very stony limestone soils where the bedrock comes close to the surface, providing excellent natural drainage and encouraging deep rooting. The vineyard is farmed according to the principles of sustainable viticulture, with interventions kept to a strict minimum.
The vintage
In Burgundy, 2022 was marked by generally hot, dry weather. These conditions produced satisfactory yields and allowed the grapes to reach generous ripeness, while careful management of the growing cycle preserved lovely freshness.
Winemaking and ageing
The grapes for this Santenay Village "Sous la Roche" 2022 are harvested by hand to preserve the integrity of the berries. Vinification follows the finest Burgundian tradition. The wine is then carefully aged in wood, in foudres and oak barrels, which builds structure while respecting the purity of the fruit and the minerality of the terroir.
