Robert Parker

Lisa Perrotti-Brown

The 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon is a blend of 96% Cabernet Sauvignon and 4% Cabernet Franc. Deep garnet-purple in color, it springs from the glass with vibrant notes of crushed black raspberries, black plums, and blackcurrant pastilles, plus hints of underbrush and bouquet garni. Medium to full-bodied, with intense, pure black fruit flavors, the fruit is well framed by ripe, grainy tannins and fantastic freshness, finishing with a skip in its step.

Leads with a nice sweet bay leaf hint, followed quickly by singed cedar and loam before the core of reserved red and black currant fruit finally starts to unfold. Warm earth-framed finish. A touch old school, with some muscular character. This should age nicely. Best from 2024 through 2034. 10,300 cases made.

This shows notes of ripe blackberries and blackcurrants with hints of licorice, cloves, walnuts and chocolate. It has full body and a velvety tannin structure. Juicy and vibrant fruit on the palate with a touch of earthiness. Smooth and delicious. Long, fruity finish. Very pure fruit. Try after 2024.

96% Cabernet Sauvignon, 4% Cabernet Franc. Toasted cereals and spice box on the nose, this is a little dominated by wood at the moment. The palate shows better black-fruit purity but the wood remains prominent. Bready and oily in fruit, the profile is heady and very smoky through to a warming, intense finish. (TP)

The 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon is one of the most potent wines I have tasted from Inglenook in a long time. Readers should be patient, as the 2019 is a mere infant. A rush of black cherry, mocha, licorice, spice and leather builds as this sumptuous, towering wine gradually opens with a bit of aeration. I would give the 2019 at least a few years in bottle, as the grippy tannins need time to soften.

Starting with the 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon, this ruby/plum-hued effort displays attractive currants and savory black cherry fruit as well as notes of tobacco, savory herbs, leather, and earth. Medium to full-bodied on the palate, it's nicely textured, moderately concentrated, and balanced, with outstanding length. 10,608 cases.

The depth and power of this wine is striking from the first moment, and even now after two years in bottle it is fresh out of the gate, barely revving up its engines. Black cherry, fennel, slate, tobacco, cigar box; give it a few more years in bottle to fully smooth out, then enjoy this luscious example of Napa Cab. Winemaker Todd DeVincezi, consultant winemaker Philippe Bascaules, 43% new oak.

Lisa Perrotti-Brown

Made from 96% Cabernet Sauvignon and 4% Cabernet Franc, the 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon is deep garnet-purple colored. It comes bounding out with exuberant notes of crushed black cherries, juicy blackcurrants, and spice cake, plus touches of espresso, tilled soil, and black olives. The medium-bodied palate is juicy and refreshing, delivering plush tannins and a spicy kick to the finish.

Description

A rich and structured California red wine

The estate

Located in the Rutherford AVA in Napa Valley, the Inglenook winery was established in 1879 by Gustave Niebaum, a Finnish captain. The estate's wines swiftly became known for their quality and richness.

From 1975 onwards, Francis and Eleanor Coppola gradually acquired the entire estate with the ambition of turning Inglenook into an emblematic reference for Californian wines. The couple undertook major renovations to the infrastructure and hired renowned winemaker André Tchelistcheff as a consultant and Philippe Bascaules of Château Margaux to oversee the vinification process.

A pioneering estate in constant search of innovation, Inglenook's uniqueness lies in its singular and authentic expression of fine terroirs through delicate, refined and perfectly balanced wines. These wines are recognised by many critics, highlighted by the fact that the Inglenook Cabernet Sauvignon 1941 wine was awarded a score of 100/100 by the Wine Spectator in 1990.

The vineyard

Inglenook reigns over a 95-hectare vineyard, which has been certified organic since 1991. The variations in topography of the vineyard reflect the mosaic of terroirs in the Napa Valley and contribute to the uniqueness of Inglenook. Since 2015 the estate has begun an ambitious programme of replanting an average of 2% of the vineyard each year, to ensure the continuous renewal of the vineyard.

The wine

A fine Rutherford wine and made from a rigorous selection of the estate's best vineyards, Inglenook's Cabernet Sauvignon pays tribute to John Daniel Jr. The grand-nephew of Gustave Niebaum's wife, who took over the running of the estate from the founder for a few years, John Daniel Jr. produced the 1941 vintage of this Cabernet Sauvignon from vine cuttings brought by Gustave Niebaum from Bordeaux.

The vintage

A wet winter was followed by a cool spring, favouring early budburst and flowering. Although July was cool, the warmer conditions in August and September were ideal for ensuring an even and gradual ripening of the grapes.

Vinification and ageing

Aged for 19 months exclusively in French oak barrels, 50% of which are new.

The blend

Cabernet Sauvignon (96%)

Cabernet Franc (4%).
