Description
A grand cru from Alsace combining richness and refinement
The estate
Domaine Ostertag is a 14.4-hectare family-run estate located mainly on the outskirts of the village of Epfig. Under the guidance of André Ostertag, the estate has established itself as an essential benchmark of the Alsace vineyard, recognised for the quality and authenticity of its cuvées.
The wine
The name Muenchberg, which literally translates as "The Monks' Mountain" in Alsatian, has its roots in the 12th century, when the Cistercian monks of Baumgarten Abbey, established at the foot of the hillside, planted the first vines there.
The vineyard
A true jewel of the Alsace vineyard, Muenchberg stands out for the singularity of its terroir, combining pink sandstone and sediments of volcanic origin. Overlooking the village of Nothalten from a preserved, south-facing valley, it enjoys an exceptional microclimate that gives its wines uncommon finesse and complexity. Farmed biodynamically since 1998, the 75-year-old vines come from a massal selection planted at high density.
Vinification and ageing
The grapes are carefully pressed as whole clusters using a pneumatic press. Fermentation, triggered naturally by indigenous yeasts, takes place spontaneously in stainless steel tanks, followed by ageing on fine lees for 14 months.
Grape variety
Riesling (100%).
