Description
Characteristics and Tasting Notes for the Mercurey 1er Cru "Pièce 13" 2024 from Domaine Lorenzon
Tasting Notes
Appearance
The colour of this red wine reveals a deep ruby hue, adorned with brilliant purple highlights.
Nose
The aromatic bouquet opens with notes of red and black fruits such as cherry, raspberry and blackberry. It then develops spicy nuances reminiscent of pepper and cinnamon, intertwined with subtle floral touches, liquorice and a delicately woody, mineral background.
Palate
On the palate, this wine reveals a full-bodied, velvety character, carried by beautiful concentration and remarkably fine tannins. Its vibrant acidity brings lovely balance, leading to a persistent, savoury finish marked by mineral tension and notes of forest floor.
Food and Wine Pairings
This cuvée pairs perfectly with noble red meats, such as beef fillet or tartare, as well as poultry in sauce. It will also complement gently cooked fatty fish or soft-ripened cheeses such as Brie.
Serving and Cellaring
This Mercurey 1er Cru "Pièce 13" 2024 has an inherently fine ageing potential, allowing it to develop beautifully in the cellar over the years.
The Intensity and Precision of a Côte Chalonnaise Wine
The Estate
Located at the heart of Burgundy, this family-run estate is a benchmark name on the Côte Chalonnaise. While the family's winemaking history dates back to the 1920s, Domaine Lorenzon was truly established under its current identity in 1997 by Bruno Lorenzon, who now runs it alongside his sister Carline. Drawing on his expertise as an oenologist and his background in cooperage, he has elevated this ten-hectare estate to the highest ranks. The domaine stands out for its highly demanding agronomic approach and its deep respect for terroir.
The Vineyard
The vineyard stretches across historic hillsides forming a natural amphitheatre in Mercurey and Montagny. The vines, aged between 35 and 50 years, grow on clay-limestone soils rich in marl, benefiting from south and south-west facing exposures. The vineyard is managed with particular rigour: the land has been worked without any herbicides for thirty years. The estate stands out for its exceptionally high planting density, reaching up to 20,000 vines per hectare, and a high trellising system designed to optimise the plant's balance, requiring meticulous manual work.
Winemaking and Ageing
The making of the Mercurey 1er Cru "Pièce 13" 2024 begins with hand-harvesting in small crates to preserve the berries. Vinification, often carried out with whole clusters, takes place in temperature-controlled tanks using indigenous yeasts, without chaptalisation or acidification. Ageing then takes place over a period of 12 to 15 months in oak barrels, around 30% of which are new. These barrels are entirely designed and crafted by Bruno Lorenzon himself, ensuring perfect control over the influence of the wood on the wine.
