Description

Characteristics and tasting notes for the Mâcon-Pierreclos "Tris de Chavigne" 2023 Domaine Guffens-Heynen

Tasting

Colour
Beautifully clear, the colour reveals a bright, luminous golden yellow hue.

Nose
Wonderfully intense, the bouquet opens with delicious notes of stone fruit such as peach and pear, mingled with hints of honey, toasted almonds and beeswax. Delicate floral and mineral nuances elevate the whole.

Palate
Rich and concentrated, the palate offers a dense texture perfectly balanced by a lively, finely etched acidity. The experience continues into a lingering finish, marked by a chalky minerality.

Food and wine pairing

This white wine pairs beautifully with shellfish such as roasted lobster or pan-seared scallops. It will also shine alongside creamy poultry dishes or matured goat's and sheep's milk cheeses.

Serving and storage

To fully appreciate the complexity of the Mâcon-Pierreclos "Tris de Chavigne" 2023, it is recommended to serve it at a temperature between 11 and 12°C. Built for the long haul, this wine can be cellared until around 2038.

Other characteristics

This vintage stands out with a pH of around 3.3 and a total acidity between 3 and 4 g/L, dominated by tartaric acid due to the year's climatic conditions.

The pure, mineral expression of a white wine from the Mâconnais

The estate

Founded in 1979 by Jean-Marie Guffens and his wife Maine Heynen, who remain its owners to this day, Domaine Guffens-Heynen has profoundly transformed perceptions of southern Burgundy wines in France. Located in the Mâconnais, this estate of around 5.65 hectares is renowned for its uncompromising approach and unwavering quest to express the true nature of its terroir. By favouring very low yields and a meticulous, almost artisanal approach to viticulture, the estate produces wines of remarkable concentration and precision, placing them among the finest in the region.

The vineyard

This cuvée comes from the Chavigne plot, located on the steepest slopes of the Mâcon-Pierreclos appellation. Rising between 270 and 425 metres in altitude, this terroir benefits from an ideal south-southwest exposure. The vines, ranging from 10 to 80 years old, thrive on clay-limestone soils strongly marked by marl. The vineyard is managed with minimal intervention: natural ground cover is maintained, ploughing is kept shallow, and no leaf stripping is carried out, so as to concentrate the plant's energy on the grapes.

The vintage

The year 2023 was marked by significant heat, culminating in a heatwave in early September. Despite these high temperatures, which accelerated ripening, the high altitude of the plots helped preserve a saving coolness at night. As a result, the grapes were able to retain remarkable acidity while developing a ripe, supple and generous profile.

Winemaking and aging

The grapes for the Mâcon-Pierreclos "Tris de Chavigne" 2023 are harvested by hand, through successive sorting passes over about twelve days, to select only berries at optimal ripeness. At the winery, the grapes are gently crushed before a precise pressing in which only the first juices are kept. Fermentation takes place using indigenous yeasts. Aging lasts between 12 and 18 months in a variety of vessels, including 25% new oak barrels, with the lees retained and regular stirring (bâtonnage) to add texture.

Grape variety

100% Chardonnay.
