An elegant, silky Savigny-Lès-Beaune from Domaine du Château de Meursault in Burgundy
The estate
Acquired in December 2012 by Olivier Halley, Domaine du Château de Meursault spans 67 hectares of vines spread across more than 110 parcels throughout the Côte de Beaune, in Burgundy. Under the leadership of Stéphane Follin-Arbelet and Emmanuel Escutenaire, the estate has undertaken a remarkable qualitative transformation, adopting certified organic viticulture in 2022. The estate holds 38 different appellations, including six grands crus and twenty premiers crus. The 12th-century Cistercian cellars, the largest in Burgundy at 3,500 square meters, bear witness to the château’s centuries-old winemaking history.
The vineyard
The Savigny-Lès-Beaune Village 2021 comes from a 3.57-hectare south-facing parcel located at the top of the Savigny hillside. The terroir is made up of clay-limestone soils mixed with gravel, giving the wine its distinctive mineral backbone. The southern exposure ensures optimal ripening of the grapes, even in challenging vintages. The vineyard is farmed organically, with a dedicated team of eighteen winegrowers providing tailored attention to each parcel throughout the year.
The vintage
The 2021 vintage in Burgundy proved particularly demanding. After a mild winter and an exceptionally warm March reaching 25°C a devastating black frost struck in early April. Spring and summer were marked by persistent coolness and significant humidity, with around half the usual sunshine between July and September. These conditions required increased vigilance against fungal diseases. Despite historically low yields, the grapes that reached maturity developed remarkable concentration and fine natural acidity.
Vinification and aging
The vinification of Savigny-Lès-Beaune Village 2021 favors gentle extraction methods, prioritizing punching down over pumping over in order to develop high-quality tannins without excessive extraction. The estate’s minimalist approach aims to let the terroir speak without undue intervention. The techniques used reflect the property’s philosophy of preventing obstacles to the expression of the terroir rather than shaping the wine to fit a predefined style.
