Description
Characteristics and Tasting Tips for the Bonnes-Mares Grand Cru 2023 from Domaine Comte Georges de Vogue
Tasting
Appearance
The wine shows a beautiful red colour.
Nose
Reserved in its youth, the bouquet opens up to reveal a fragrant, complex character. Subtle floral notes of iris and violet intertwine harmoniously with aromas of black fruit, blue fruit such as plum, and soft red berries such as cherry. Delicate hints of aniseed and vine-cutting smoke complete this rich aromatic palette.
Palate
The palate is medium- to full-bodied, with a fleshy, layered texture. The flavours are rich and opulent, carried by a particularly seductive velvety texture. This fruity generosity is perfectly balanced by a serious underlying structure and well-integrated tannins, lending the whole great precision.
Food and Wine Pairing
This great red wine pairs beautifully with high-quality roast or grilled red meats, such as beef fillet or veal rump, served with root vegetables. After a few years of cellaring, it will elevate more refined dishes such as feathered or furred game, black truffle recipes, or characterful cheeses such as Époisses or a mature Comté.
Serving and Ageing
To fully appreciate the complexity of the Bonnes-Mares Grand Cru 2023, serve it at around 16–17°C in large glasses. Built for very long ageing, this wine calls for patience and will continue to develop gracefully in the cellar, drinking well until around 2048.
The Floral Elegance and Power of a Great Burgundy Grand Cru
The Estate
Founded in 1450 by Jean Moisson, Domaine Comte Georges de Vogue is a true institution based in Chambolle-Musigny, in the heart of Burgundy, France. Its current name stems from the family's union with the aristocratic de Vogüé family in the 18th century. Boasting an exceptional family continuity spanning twenty generations, the estate is now run by co-managers Claire de Causans and Marie de Ladoucette. Covering some 12.5 hectares, this legendary property is renowned worldwide for its technical rigour and its commitment to conveying the purest expression of its terroirs.
The Vineyard
The Bonnes-Mares climat lies on an east-facing slope at an altitude of between 270 and 310 metres. The estate's vines, farmed according to organic principles without certification, are located exclusively on the Chambolle-Musigny side of the appellation. They are rooted in red clay soils that give the grapes a velvety texture and a distinctive floral profile.
The Vintage
The 2023 vintage in Burgundy was marked by weather conditions conducive to high levels of ripeness. Thanks to judiciously chosen harvest dates, the vines were able to retain lovely freshness and great energy throughout the growing cycle.
Winemaking and Ageing
The house philosophy is to faithfully express the terroir. For the Bonnes-Mares Grand Cru 2023, extraction is carried out with great precision in order to preserve the integrity of the fruit. The wine is aged with sparing use of new oak barrels, which give it structure while allowing its natural aromatic complexity to shine through.
Grape Variety
100% Pinot Noir.
