Deep crimson. Could only be burgundy! Just a hint of cheesiness. Dry end but no worse than many other more expensive wines. GV (JR)

Le Figaro Vin

A fine, spicy nose with black pepper and meat notes. The palate reveals character and drive, framed with precision.

Description

Characteristics and Tasting Notes for the Marsannay Village "Les Vaudenelles" 2023 from Domaine Bruno Clair

Tasting

Appearance
The colour reveals a beautiful ruby red hue of medium intensity.

Nose
Very fresh and precise, the nose reveals a rich aromatic palette blending red fruits, such as strawberry and morello cherry, with hints of black fruits and orange zest. Subtle floral and spicy touches, along with nuances of wet earth and raw meat, add further complexity to the bouquet.

Palate
Full-bodied and elegant, the palate offers concentrated fruit supported by a lively mineral acidity. Soft, powdery tannins structure a straight, elongated palate that stretches into a long, balanced finish, marked by a slight youthful austerity.

Food and wine pairing

This red wine pairs wonderfully with fine charcuterie, roasted poultry or slow-cooked meats such as beef bourguignon. It will also beautifully complement game dishes, such as a venison stew, or mushroom-based preparations.

Serving and cellaring

For optimal tasting, it is recommended to serve this Marsannay Village "Les Vaudenelles" 2023 between 15 and 17°C. Decanting for one to two hours before serving is advised to soften its youthfulness. Built for ageing, this wine will reveal its full potential from 2029 and can be cellared until around 2038.

The estate

Founded in 1979 by Bruno Clair, Domaine Bruno Clair is an iconic name in Burgundy, France. Located in Marsannay-la-Côte, this family-owned estate spans approximately 27 hectares across 32 appellations. Heir to a long-standing expertise, the estate is now run by the seventh generation, represented by Edouard and Arthur Clair. Faithful to a minimal-intervention philosophy, they craft, alongside cellar master Philippe Brun, wines renowned for their finesse and the pure expression of their terroirs.

The vineyard

This cuvée comes from the "Les Vaudenelles" climat, a 1.27-hectare plot located on the heights of the Marsannay appellation. Planted in 1976, these old vines thrive at around 320 metres above sea level on a south-east facing slope. The terroir stands out for its very poor, almost white clay-limestone soils, resting on Ostrea marls and an outcropping limestone bedrock. The estate favours sustainable farming and hand-harvesting with rigorous sorting to preserve the quality of the grapes.

Winemaking and ageing

The winemaking of the Marsannay Village "Les Vaudenelles" 2023 follows a gentle approach, incorporating 10 to 20% whole clusters. Maceration takes place in wooden vats for 10 to 15 days. The wine is then aged for an extended period of 18 to 20 months in oak barrels, with a moderate proportion of around 20 to 25% new oak, allowing the wine to be structured without masking the brightness of the fruit.
