Description

Characteristics and tasting notes for the Riesling Grand Cru "Steingrubler" 2024 Domaine Barmès-Buecher

Tasting

Colour
The colour reveals a light to medium pale straw yellow hue, adorned with golden highlights. It stands out for its brilliant clarity and lovely viscosity.

Nose
The nose reveals an intensely mineral bouquet, evoking wet stone, quartz and flint. It then opens onto vibrant citrus aromas such as lemon and its zest, accompanied by notes of stone fruit like white peach, all underscored by delicate floral touches.

Palate
On the palate, this white wine offers a slightly rich texture supported by a bright, refreshing acidity. The remarkably long finish lingers on superb saline and mineral notes that coat the palate.

Food and wine pairing

This wine pairs wonderfully with delicate white fish accompanied by a light cream sauce, seafood such as oysters or ceviche, as well as herb-roasted poultry. It also enhances fresh goat cheeses, aged hard cheeses and asparagus-based dishes.

Service and storage

To fully appreciate the Riesling Grand Cru "Steingrubler" 2024, it is recommended to serve it at a temperature between 8 and 10°C, taking care to open the bottle 30 to 60 minutes before tasting. This wine can be enjoyed in its youth, but it will continue to evolve favorably in the cellar until around 2039.

Other characteristics

This wine stands out for its dry profile, with a residual sugar level kept as low as possible thanks to natural fermentation, allowing the full purity and tension of the terroir to shine through.

The mineral, vibrant expression of a great white wine from Alsace

The estate

Founded in 1985 following the marriage of François Barmès and Geneviève Buecher, Domaine Barmès-Buecher is a key reference in Alsace, France. Spanning 18 hectares divided into 96 plots, the estate distinguished itself early on through its deep commitment to biodynamic viticulture. Today, the estate is passionately led by Maxime Barmès, who oversees the vineyard and winemaking, alongside his sister Sophie, who handles sales, and their mother Geneviève. This family crafts authentic, vibrant wines that remain true to their terroirs.

The vineyard

Located in the village of Wettolsheim in Alsace, the 0.90-hectare plot of the Grand Cru Steingrubler benefits from south and east exposure. Sheltered from rainfall by the Vosges mountains, this terroir enjoys a particularly dry microclimate. The vines thrive on a complex geological mosaic, made up of clay-limestone marls mixed with granitic sands, quartz crystals and decomposing granite. The vineyard is entirely farmed according to biodynamic principles, favoring meticulous manual work and the use of animal traction to preserve the vitality of the soils.

The vintage

The year 2024 began with a mild winter that encouraged early budbreak, followed by a cooler, wetter spring and early summer. August brought the warmth needed for ripening, before a return of some rain in September. These climatic conditions shaped a classic vintage, characterized by moderate alcohol levels and perfectly preserved bright acidity.

Winemaking and aging

The grapes intended for the Riesling Grand Cru "Steingrubler" 2024 are hand-harvested and sorted on a vibrating table. The juice flows by gravity to avoid any mechanical pumping. Fermentation starts spontaneously thanks to indigenous yeasts, without temperature control or induced malolactic fermentation. The wine then undergoes extended aging on fine lees in large neutral oak vats, allowing it to develop complexity while preserving its freshness, before light filtration ahead of bottling.
