James Suckling

Stuart Pigott

Precisely ripe—think a fresh pineapple that is juicy and refreshing—and concentrated, with abundant power on the quite imposing, medium-bodied palate. With aeration it develops orange peel aromas. Wonderful succulence and purity in the very long, compact finish. Only just beginning to show what it is made of. From three parcels on limestone soil. From biodynamically grown grapes. Drink or hold.

Vinous

Anne Krebiehl, MW

The 2023 Riesling Furstentum Grand Cru, harvested from clay on limestone, is subdued on the nose, although more swirling reveals lovely reduction. The palate, however, is all sunny brightness with soothing freshness, expressing the depth and coolness of the limestone with serene, juicy, ripe lemon and pale yellow Reine Claude plum notes. Purity and poise define the 2023. (Bone-dry)

Description

Characteristics and Tasting Notes of the Riesling Grand Cru "Furstentum" 2023 Domaine Albert Mann

Tasting

Colour
The visual appearance reveals a brilliant yellow hue illuminated by subtle golden reflections.

Nose
The bouquet proves both delicate and expressive, opening with aromas of citrus fruits and orange blossom. With aeration, it is enriched by scents of exotic fruits such as pineapple, candied lemon, honey and mandarin peel, all underscored by a mineral touch reminiscent of flint.

Palate
The attack stands out for its liveliness and salinity. The palate then offers remarkable tension and freshness, carried by a fine acidity and pronounced minerality. The finish, of beautiful length, proves frank, round and mouth-watering, enhanced by tannins of great subtlety.

Food and wine pairing

The estate suggests pairing this wine with cod, langoustines or even a pad thai. More generally, it will elevate delicate fish, seafood as well as dishes with sweet and sour flavours.

Service and storage

This Riesling Grand Cru "Furstentum" 2023 reveals exceptional ageing potential and can be enjoyed from 2026 until around 2038.

Other characteristics

This dry white wine has an alcohol content of 13%.

The mineral elegance of a grand cru from Alsace by Domaine Albert Mann

The estate

Born from the union of the Mann and Barthelmé families, whose winegrowing roots date back to 1654, Domaine Albert Mann truly took off in its current form in the 1980s. Located in Wettolsheim in Alsace (France), this 25-hectare estate is now run by the Barthelmé family, with the involvement of the new generation embodied by Antoine and Pauline. A pioneer respectful of its environment, the estate stands out for its mastery of biodynamics and its division into around a hundred plots, offering an authentic and diverse expression of the great Alsatian terroirs.

The vineyard

This wine comes from the prestigious Furstentum grand cru, located in Alsace between the villages of Kientzheim and Sigolsheim. Rising to between 300 and 400 metres in altitude, this terroir enjoys an ideal south and south-west facing exposure. The vines flourish on brown limestone soils, stony and highly permeable, promoting excellent drainage. The vineyard is managed according to the strict principles of biodynamics, with meticulous soil work, controlled partial grassing and exclusively hand-harvested grapes to preserve the fruit's integrity.

The vintage

The year 2023 proved particularly favourable in the region. Weather conditions allowed the berries to reach optimal ripeness. This mild growing cycle produced a harvest of very fine concentration, perfectly balanced by structuring acidity.

Winemaking and ageing

The making of the Riesling Grand Cru "Furstentum" 2023 relies on a minimal-intervention approach in order to preserve aromatic purity. Fermentation takes place in stainless steel tanks under the exclusive action of indigenous yeasts, respecting natural cycles. The wine is then aged on fine lees for around ten months, before undergoing very light filtration prior to bottling.

Grape variety

This wine is made from 100% Riesling.
