Wine Spectator

Sophisticated and richly styled, this leads with voluptuous fruit streaked with incense smoke, smoldering graphite and meatiness. Shows leafiness and a subtle mocha note alongside a gentle streak of vanilla that is well-integrated on the creamy-textured frame. Drink now through 2028. 4,200 cases made, 200 cases imported.

Very fresh nose of dark fresh plum and summer flower aromas. Medium-bodied and well structured, with fine tannins carrying the long, lively and stony finish. From 20 hectares of estate vineyards, mostly planted in the early 1980s. A pure Syrah matured 50% in stainless steel and 50% in Burgundian barrels, a quarter of which were new. Drinkable from release, but better from 2026.

Bright dark purple colour. Pure and floral nose offering violet, blackberry, pepper, fresh meat, and some smoky notes. Fine concentration and density with ripe and refreshing tannin, meaty dark fruit with garrigue and pepper notes leading to a long and persistent finish.

Maison Delas bought this estate, previously owned by Cave de Tain, in 2006. Evoking aromas of licorice, smoke and smoky bacon, the 2022 Crozes-Hermitage Domaine des Grands Chemins is medium-bodied, taut and slightly austere, characterized by structured tannins, yet it concludes with a long, ethereal finish and some freshness. Allowing it to age in the cellar for 2 to 3 years seems to be the best approach to softening its edges. It matured in equal parts stainless steel and barrels, of which 20% are new.

Description

Characteristics and tasting notes of the Delas Crozes-Hermitage "Domaine des Grands Chemins" 2022

The authentic expression of a Rhône terroir

The estate

Founded in 1835, the Delas house has established itself as a leading reference in the Rhône Valley. Initially named Audibert et Delas, it took on its current name in 1924. Today, the estate belongs to the Roederer Collection, led by the Rouzaud family with Frédéric Rouzaud as president, while Marc Hoellinger has served as managing director since 2023. With 30 hectares of vineyards spread across prestigious appellations, the estate brilliantly combines historical heritage with technical modernity to reveal the full complexity of its terroirs.

The vineyard

This red wine comes from a vineyard of approximately 20 hectares within the Crozes-Hermitage appellation. The vines, planted in the early 1980s, thrive on the specific plot known as "Le Chassis." This unique terroir is characterized by alluvial terraces formed at the confluence of the Rhône and Isère rivers, made up of silt and rolled pebbles. Exposed to the influence of the mistral wind, which naturally protects the vines from disease, the estate has practiced organic farming since 2013, favoring a sustainable and environmentally friendly approach.

Winemaking and aging

The winemaking and aging processes take place in the estate's new state-of-the-art winery, inaugurated in 2020 in Tain-l'Hermitage. This cutting-edge facility, designed to optimize the production of premium wines, allows for precise handling of the wine while respecting the identity of its original terroir.

Grape variety

Syrah (100%).

Tasting notes

Color
The glass reveals a deep, dark color streaked with brilliant violet hues.

Nose
The aromatic bouquet opens with intense notes of crushed black fruit, mingled with subtle touches of licorice and black pepper, typical of its grape variety.

Palate
The palate opens full and generous, revealing a silky, well-integrated tannic structure. It unfolds with delicious flavors of blackberry and blackcurrant, extending into a persistent, elegantly spiced finish.

Food and wine pairing

This red wine from the Rhône Valley will beautifully complement a grilled beef dish, duck breast with cherries, or a selection of aged cheeses.

Service and storage

For optimal enjoyment, this wine is best served between 16 and 18°C. This 2022 vintage can be enjoyed now or cellared until 2032 to allow its full complexity to develop.
