Description
Characteristics and tasting notes of Croft's 20 Year Old Tawny
Tasting
Appearance
This Port reveals a delicate tawny hue, enhanced by a wide and elegant ochre halo on the rim of the glass.
Nose
The aromatic bouquet is particularly ripe and intense, releasing complex scents of walnut and wood, harmoniously blended with notes of almonds and figs.
Palate
With a remarkably soft and silky texture, the palate offers a beautiful concentration reminiscent of ripe figs. The experience ends with a long finish, rich and imbued with mature flavours.
Food and wine pairings
This wine pairs wonderfully with desserts based on almonds, red fruits or dark chocolate. It also enhances blue-veined cheeses as well as walnuts and roasted almonds.
Serving and cellaring
This 20 Year Old Tawny is ready to be enjoyed upon release and does not require any decanting. It is recommended to serve it lightly chilled, at a temperature between 12 and 16°C. The bottle should be kept upright, in a cool place at a constant temperature and away from light. Once opened, it will retain all its freshness for 2 to 3 months.
An exceptional Tawny Port combining tradition and complexity
The estate
Officially founded in 1588, although its history under its current name dates back to 1736, Croft is one of the most illustrious houses in the Douro Valley, in Portugal. Located at the heart of the Duriense wine region, this iconic brand stands out for its centuries-old expertise. Since 2024, the estate has been owned by the Taylor Fonseca group, with Adrian Bridge at its helm. Renowned worldwide, the house excels in crafting prestigious wines for cellaring, perfectly combining traditional heritage and constant innovation.
The vineyard
The grapes come from Quinta da Roêda, a historic estate acquired in 1888 and located in Pinhão. This exceptional terroir, regarded as one of the jewels for the production of Port, is characterised by steep slopes and schist soils typical of the central sub-region of the Douro. It is home to some of the oldest vines in the region, forming the heart of the House's production.
Winemaking and aging
The crafting of this 20 Year Old Tawny relies on traditional methods passed down from generation to generation. This Duriense cuvée benefits from a long ageing of an average of twenty years. This maturation takes place in used oak casks with a capacity of approximately 630 litres, allowing this Port to reach its full maturity and develop its great aromatic complexity before bottling.
Grape varieties
This traditional Portuguese blend is mainly composed of Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca and Tinta Roriz. This cuvée does not come from a single year, but results from a meticulous blend of different vintages carefully selected to guarantee the consistency and unique style of the House.
