Description
Characteristics and tasting notes of the Croft Fine White Port
Tasting
Appearance
Of a very pale colour, reminiscent of light straw, this port is illuminated by bright lemony highlights.
Nose
The bouquet reveals great aromatic richness, marked by crisp floral notes and scents of fresh almonds. These mingle with subtle hints of ripe fruit, honey and oak.
Palate
The texture proves velvety and ample. This medium-dry wine offers a fine balance thanks to a lively acidity that brings plenty of freshness. The finish is long, flavoursome and delicately tangy.
Food and wine pairings
Ideal as an aperitif, neat and well chilled, or lengthened with tonic, ice cubes and a fresh mint leaf. It pairs wonderfully with salted almonds, olives, as well as seafood, grilled fish or soft cheeses such as fresh goat's cheese. It also enhances Asian dishes, white meats with fruit, or lemon and chocolate desserts.
Serving and cellaring
This Fine White Port is ready to be enjoyed and requires no decanting. It is recommended to serve it well chilled, at a temperature between 6 and 10°C. The bottle should be stored upright, away from light, in a cool place at a constant temperature. Once opened, it retains all its freshness and is best enjoyed within the following month.
The elegance of an iconic white Port from the Croft House in the Duriense
The estate
Founded in 1588, Croft is the oldest Port-producing House in the region, operating uninterrupted since its creation. Today, the estate belongs to The Fladgate Partnership group, which carries on the heritage and identity of this prestigious property. Located in Vila Nova de Gaia, the House crafts cuvées renowned worldwide, blending centuries-old traditions with modernity, while taking its place within the exceptional winegrowing landscape of the Duriense.
The vineyard
The grapes used for this Port mainly come from the steep hillsides of the upper Douro valley. This exceptional terroir is characterised by schist and granite soils offering excellent drainage. The continental climate, marked by very hot and dry summers as well as cold winters, allows the vines to develop concentrated berries while preserving a fine acidity. The harvest is carried out by hand.
Winemaking and aging
The production of the Fine White Port begins with an immediate separation of the juice from the skins after crushing, in order to preserve the clarity and delicacy of the aromas. Fermentation is then halted by the addition of a clear eau-de-vie. The wines subsequently age for about three years, in oak casks and stainless steel vats, thus acquiring their mellow character and complexity.
Grape varieties
This port is made from the Arinto, Boal, Esgana Cão, Folgasão, Gouveio, Viosinho, Rabigato, Malvasia Fina, Códega do Larinho and Moscatel Galego Branco grape varieties.
