Description
Characteristics and tasting notes for the Auxey-Duresses Village 2024 by Comte Armand
Tasting
Colour
An intense violet and purple hue, highlighted by subtle, paler glints at the rim.
Nose
The aromatic bouquet opens with vibrant notes of crunchy red fruit such as cherry and raspberry. It then develops into deeper aromas of chocolate, dried fruit and walnut, enhanced by delicate floral touches reminiscent of potpourri. A mineral, ferrous dimension evoking blood orange completes this complex ensemble.
Palate
Medium-bodied, the palate is surprisingly dense, with a compact texture. The thick, gripping tannins lend this wine a stature worthy of a premier cru. Fine mineral tension and lively acidity support the red fruit flavours, leading to a long, mouth-watering finish with ferrous accents.
Food and wine pairing
This red wine will pair beautifully with roast poultry, such as duck with sweet spices, or with grilled salmon. It will also enhance mushroom-based dishes, truffle pasta and oven-roasted root vegetables.
Serving and cellaring
For optimal enjoyment, serve this wine at around 15–16°C. With its firm structure, this Auxey-Duresses 2024 can be cellared and will be at its best between approximately 2027 and 2038.
The mineral, structured expression of an Auxey-Duresses Village wine by Comte Armand
The estate
Located in the heart of Pommard, in Burgundy (France), Domaine Comte Armand traces its origins back to 1828, when the renowned Clos des Épeneaux monopole became part of the family's holdings. Now run by Olivier Armand, this prestigious nine-hectare estate is known for wines that combine power, richness and refinement. A pioneer of sustainable viticulture, the domaine has been certified organic since 2005 and follows biodynamic principles. Under the technical direction of Paul Zinetti, Comte Armand has established itself as an essential benchmark.
The vineyard
This Auxey-Duresses wine comes from a plot of vines around forty years old, planted on a steep, due-south-facing slope. This distinctive terroir stands out for its extremely calcareous nature, with active limestone reaching as much as 30%. Farmed according to biodynamic principles, this soil encourages deep rooting and gives the grapes natural concentration as well as remarkable minerality.
The vintage
2024 was marked by particularly challenging weather conditions. A difficult flowering, followed by violent hailstorms, had a considerable impact on the growing cycle. These climatic setbacks led to a drastic drop in yields, limiting the harvest to just 20% of a normal year. Nevertheless, the steep gradient and highly calcareous nature of the slope helped keep the berries healthy in the face of mildew pressure.
Vinification and ageing
To adapt to the exceptional concentration of the fruit, this Auxey-Duresses 2024 was vinified from fully destemmed bunches, a deliberate choice aimed at preserving the purity of the fruit. The wine was then aged in oak barrels, with a measured proportion of around 20% new wood, refining the tannic structure without masking the identity of the terroir.
Grape variety
100% Pinot Noir.
