Decanter

Gorgeous fragrant nose, perfumed black cherries and touches of strawberry leaf. Ripe and fleshy but at the same time this has high acidity so you get the push-pull of lightness and freshness—linear and straight—with mineral-tinged tannins that coat the tongue and mouth. Not massively persistent but good presence in the mouth and a salinity on the finish. One for earlier drinking.

James Suckling

Iodine, black beans and ink on the nose. Savory and chewy with a medium body and slightly green tannins. Drink now.

Jeff Leve

Espresso and red currants define the core and character of this medium-bodied, bright, crisp, chewy, sweet, tart, and fresh, high-toned wine. Drink from 2024–2032.

Falstaff

Falstaff

Dark ruby garnet, opaque core, purple reflections, delicate edge brightening. Nuances of liquorice, juniper, black berry fruit, fine nuances of mandarin and nougat. Juicy, red-berried and fresh structure, mineral-salty, lively style, lemony finish, a stimulating food companion.

Jane Anson

In bottle this remains an unfussy wine with some attractive cocoa and vanilla notes that speak of oak ageing, sweet berry fruit that loses some steam through the mid-palate. There is careful winemaking on show here, with tannic grip, but impacted by the vintage.

Description

A Saint-Estèphe Cru Bourgeois with an alluring complexity and balance

The estate

Acquired in 1989 by the Bouchara family, Château Tour de Pez has enjoyed a true renaissance following the extensive work carried out on the estate, both in the vineyard and the cellar. From one vintage to the next, the estate has stood out among the finest references in the Saint-Estèphe appellation due to its precise and high-quality wines. Boasting a strong identity thanks to the presence of Merlot, the wines by this Cru Bourgeois provide an utterly elegant experience and promise a lengthy ageing potential.

The vineyard

Château Tour de Pez 2021 is a Saint-Estephe wine that stems from a 30-hectare vineyard. The vines are planted on soils composed of Gironde gravel and clay-limestone.

The vintage

Although the vineyard started to bud early, it was hit by a major spring frost in April and early May, which impacted some plots. The cool, wet conditions until mid-August increased the vineyard’s disease pressure, which was managed thanks to the château’s rigorous teams. Thereafter, the milder weather and a pleasant temperature range were ideal and helped to refine the ripening process up until the harvest.

The blend

Merlot (60%)

Cabernet Sauvignon (27%)

Cabernet Franc (13%).
