Vinum

Pleasing spicy aromatics; full-bodied attack, well-built, full-bodied, firm, fresh tannins, good length; cleanly vinified, balanced.

Wine Spectator

James Molesworth

Juicy and forward, with expressive cassis, plum reduction and blackberry paste flavors layered together and set against a backdrop of black tea, bay and alder. Long, subtle mineral note leaves a mouthwatering feel at the very end. Lovely. Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Petit Verdot. Drink now through 2035. 8,333 cases made.

Decanter

Youthful, plush and opulent, boasting concentrated aromas of ripe black berry fruit, violet lift and fresh cedar oak spice. The well-structured palate supports fleshy black and red currant fruit enlivened by vibrant acidity, peppery spice and inky, grippy tannins. A very approachable, tasty, harmonious claret for mid-term enjoyment.

James Suckling

Blackberries, mushrooms and flowers on the nose. Full-bodied with a very compact palate that shows creamy and refined tannins that are strong and driven. Some tar and wet earth at the end. Needs three or four years to come together. Best after 2025.

45% Cabernet Sauvignon, 44% Merlot, 10% Petit Verdot, 1% Cabernet Franc; 35% new oak. Barrel sample. Black as the ace of spades. Lifted and fragrant with sweet blueberry fruit. Really pretty and inviting, just a hint of vanilla sweetness. On the palate, firmer and drier but it’s a complete whole and gently handled, the tannins smooth though compact and slightly blocky at the moment. (JH)

The 2018 Siran, picked from September 20 until October 18, is raised in around 33% new oak (as usual). It has an intense, focused nose of vibrant black fruit, more floral than its peers, with violet and incense aromas. The palate is framed by pliant tannins and crisp acidity, and delivers gentle grip and signs of graphite toward the finish. An accomplished Siran that is going to give 20-plus years of drinking pleasure.

Showing a good depth of color, the wine kicks off with flowers, forest floor, espresso, tobacco leaf, spice and a hint of truffle. On the palate the wine is round, lush, full-bodied and carries its multiple layers of sweet fruits nicely. There is depth, length and energy here. You can enjoy this for at least 20 years or more. The wine blends 45% Merlot, 44% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Petit Verdot and 1% Cabernet Franc, 14% ABV.

Deep dark ruby, purple reflections, delicate bright rim. Fine dark forest berry fruit, a hint of figs and cherries, candied orange zest. Juicy, elegant, mineral texture, ripe cherries, integrated tannins, chocolatey finish.

This estate consistently turns out an outstanding Margaux, and their 2018 Château Siran is certainly no exception. Lots of spicy currants, graphite, sandalwood, tobacco, and loamy soil notes define the bouquet, and it's medium to full-bodied, with a round, expansive, mouth-filling texture, solid tannins, and a great finish. It's not the most elegant Margaux out there, but it's a complex, character-filled beauty that will keep for 15 years.

Purple garnet with a violet rim. Deep, black-berried bouquet with sloe juice and elderberry essence. On the palate, a tight-knit body, demanding tannins and a slightly powdery extract; the building blocks are there. Concludes in a focused finish with plum skin and fine, flaky notes.

Kunz barrel sample 19: (44% Merlot, 45% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Petit Verdot, 1% Cabernet Franc) Slim, red-berried, slightly green bouquet, red cherries, old wood, white pepper. A firm-core palate with light fruit, sandy tannins, an angular structure, medium aromatics, and a dry finish.

The 2018 Siran has a deep garnet-purple color. It bursts with crème de cassis, baked blackberries, and black cherries, plus hints of menthol and Chinese five spice. Full-bodied, rich and plush on the palate, it is chock-full of spicy fruit with a long, lifted finish.

La RVF

Very complete, with explosive fruit (black fruits), a full body, chew, and silky tannins.

Le Figaro Vin

On the nose, aromas of small red fruits and spices, with a delicate peppery touch. The palate is discreet, showing notes of blackberry, raspberry, red spices, and a finish that has not yet revealed its full potential. Patience…

The 2018 shines with its fruity brightness and diversity. It shows a rather mature side, but the Cabernet also brings a touch of freshness. The silky, smooth attack heralds a generous, inviting, and harmonious wine. It’s already very good now, and it will be hard to resist over time. A delicious wine.

Robert Parker

Lisa Perrotti-Brown

Medium to deep garnet-purple in color, the 2018 Siran wafts out of the glass with very pretty scents of red roses, cinnamon stick, chocolate-covered cherries and fragrant earth, giving way to a core of warm cassis and plum preserves, plus a touch of camphor. The medium to full-bodied palate is absolutely laden with rich, juicy black fruits, supported by velvety tannins and plenty of freshness, finishing long and perfumed. This very classy, absolutely delicious Margaux tastes great now, but it will reward 3–4 years of cellaring and has the stuffing to continue thereafter for 20+ years.

A warm vintage during harvest, and this is showing a rich plum colour, with a satin texture that speaks to alcohol levels higher than usual in this part of the Médoc peninsula. Great quality though, and the Petit Verdot is put to good use in giving lift, spice, focus, depth, and good balance to the exuberance of the year. Appealing expansion through the mid-palate, this is a great wine to look out for drinking over the next 10 to 15 years. Marjolaine Defrance cellar master, Hubet de Boüard consultant. 35% new oak.

Wine Enthusiast

From an estate in the southern part of Margaux, this wine has just the right mix of rich tannins and taut black-currant flavors to give upfront freshness and potential for further aging. Structured and fruity, it should be drunk from 2027.

Description

The aromatic signature and elegance of an essential Margaux wine

The property
Owned by the Miailhe family for over 160 years, Château Siran is one of the emblematic references of the Margaux appellation. The Château Siran was already renowned for the quality of its wines as early as the 18th century.

The vineyard

Located in the Margaux appellation, Château Siran oversees a 25-hectare vineyard superbly situated on gravel and pebble soils. The vines are located on hillocks made up of ancient alluvium and covered with fine clayey gravels. The vineyard is managed using sustainable viticulture and without chemical herbicides.

Vinification and aging
Parcel selection, fermentation in thermo-regulated stainless steel tanks from 60 to 180hl, pumping over, racking according to the batches, maceration at 28-30°, vatting from 18 to 24 days, malolactic fermentation partly in barrels.

Blend
This Château Siran 2018 is the result of a blend of cabernet sauvignon (45%), complemented by merlot (44%), petit verdot (10%) and cabernet franc (1%). A very good vintage for this great name of the Margaux appellation.
