Robert Parker Wine Advocate

Robert M. Parker, Jr.

In comparison to the more open-knit, flattering style of the 1993, the 1994 is a backward, less precocious, more tannic wine that needs another 5-7 years of cellaring. It is a wine that recalls the style of the more tannic vintages of the sixties and seventies. The healthy dark ruby/purple color is followed by copious quantities of smoky, toasty, new oak. There is an impression of ripe fruit, but, for now, the wine's personality remains dominated by excruciatingly strong tannin. Give this wine 5-6 years of cellaring, as patience is definitely a requirement for purchasing the 1994 Lagrange. It should last for 15-20 years.

Pretty and elegant, with perfumed aromas of berries and minerals and a pleasant combination of toasted oak and berry flavors. Medium-bodied, with medium, fine tannins. Drink now through 1999.

The 1994 Lagrange, a blend of 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 31% Merlot and 9% Petit Verdot, feels just a little "thin" on the nose compared to other Saint-Julien wines tasted from this vintage. The bouquet offers tobacco and cigar humidor scents, dusky black fruit and a hint of dark chocolate. The palate is medium-bodied with a pleasant fluidity on the entry. Good weight for the vintage, yet what is missing is complexity and tension. There is a static sense to this 1994 that I don't think you will find in other, more benevolent growing seasons. Still, after 30 years, it does give some pleasure. It's just not an exciting Lagrange. Tasted at the château.

Colour not much deeper than the 1993, medium garnet with still some ruby highlights. On the nose, rather slender, yet showing a fine, polished Cabernet aromatic profile with cherry notes; it opens slowly and is in the early stages of maturity. On the palate, nicely supple on the outside, with a supportive tannin-acid structure within; muscular, fairly classic, and can still gain.

95: Very deep color. Dense, concentrated bouquet; very berry-driven fruit with a sweet impression. On the palate, complex, already well-balanced, rich-bodied, with well-integrated barrel aging. A great Pomerol. 17/20 2002 – 2010

A closed, fruity, deep bouquet with black berries and spicy tobacco notes. Fruity, still closed and dense on the palate, with good fruit and a tightly knit structure. Long, dense finish. Classic Bordeaux. 17/20 2006 - 2020

Logo on the cork: CB Having had to restructure its vineyard after buying the estate in 1983, Lagrange was 10 years ahead of many of its peers. A success that has been constantly confirmed. A fine wine with a slightly animal nose, a caressing palate, tannins that are certainly a bit pronounced, but with lovely flavours of fruit, ink and meat. Calls for food alongside it!

Description

Characteristics and Tasting Notes of Château Lagrange 1994

Tasting Notes

Appearance
This vintage reveals a seductive deep purple colour.

Nose
The bouquet is vibrant, releasing beautiful aromas of blackcurrant and cherry, delicately underscored by a subtle oaky touch.

Palate
The attack is smooth and full-bodied, offering an abundance of fruit. The finish, meanwhile, proves tannic and reflects the austerity characteristic of this vintage.

Food and Wine Pairings
This red wine will pair wonderfully with roasted or grilled meats such as a rack of lamb or a fine cut of beef. It will also complement noble poultry served with mushrooms, as well as pressed cooked cheeses.

Serving and Cellaring
Château Lagrange 1994 has very good ageing potential. Given its age, it has now reached full maturity and is ready to be enjoyed.

The Elegance of a Great Saint-Julien Cru by Château Lagrange

The Estate
Located in the Bordeaux region, this vast estate saw its true viticultural rise begin in the 18th century under the impetus of the Branne family. Recognised as a third growth in the 1855 classification, Château Lagrange spans 118 hectares of vines dedicated to red wines. Acquired in 1983 by the Japanese group Suntory, its current owner, the estate has undergone a spectacular modernisation. Now led by the duo Matthieu Bordes and Keiichi Shiina, the estate stands out for its strong environmental commitment and its constant pursuit of precision.

The Vineyard
The single-block vineyard rises to 24 metres in altitude within the Saint-Julien appellation. The vines, averaging around forty years of age, are planted at high density on two superb gravel mounds of Günz origin. This warm, well-drained terroir rests on a clay-limestone subsoil. The estate practises sustainable viticulture, certified by several environmental labels, fostering biodiversity through the preservation of hedgerows and wetlands.

The Vintage
The year began with early budbreak followed by a mild May. July was marked by an intense heatwave. In August, rare but regular rainfall encouraged a rapid and early véraison. While the Merlot was harvested in the rain but remained in good sanitary condition, the return of fine weather allowed the Cabernet Sauvignon to complete its ripening serenely. Harvesting took place from 19 to 30 September.

Winemaking and Ageing
To craft Château Lagrange 1994, the grapes underwent a rigorous plot-by-plot selection. Fermentation was carried out in vats with precise temperature control. The wine was then aged in oak barrels, a significant proportion of which were new, lending structure to the whole.
