Description
A Balanced and Concentrated White Burgundy
Château de la Maltroye is a historical property in the Chassagne-Montrachet area of Burgundy, expanding over 13 hectares of vines in Chassagne and 2 hectares in Santenay. The estate is owned and operated by Jean-Pierre Cournut, who carries out sustainable farming practices and purposefully limits yields to favour quality over quantity. The Chassagne-Montrachet Premier Cru Morgeot Vigne Blanche by Château de la Maltroye is a 100% Chardonnay white Burgundy wine made with grapes from the Morgeot Premier Cru. This cru was historically better known for red wines, though the Vigne Blanche area is fully dedicated to white vines. The soil here is marl-limestone, rich in iron oxide and other elements, providing a mineral quality to the wines, while deep, clayey soils contribute texture and density. Château de la Maltroye has two plots totalling 1 hectare in this cru, with vines over 60 years old. In order to preserve the natural freshness and finesse of the Chardonnay, Cournut chose to carry out alcoholic fermentation in stainless steel vats at low temperatures. Malolactic fermentation followed, and then maturation in barrel (less than 1/3 of which was new oak) for a period of 1 year. The Chassagne-Montrachet Premier Cru Morgeot Vigne Blanche by Château de la Maltroye shows subtle toasted notes on the nose, making way for fresh white flowers (eucalyptus) and generous, ripe white and yellow fruits (juicy pear, white peach and apricot). Hints of minerality and melted, buttery touches from the oak round out these fresh and ripe aromas. On the palate, this White Burgundy is balanced and concentrated, with a certain salinity adding a vibrant energy to this wine. Already very expressive, this white Morgeot will age beautifully over the next few years in the cellar.
