The authentic expression of a Mercurey terroir

The estate

Built at the beginning of the 18th century in Burgundy, France, Château de Chamirey truly began its winemaking history in 1934 when the Marquis de Jouennes d'Herville decided to bottle his wines at the estate. Located in the heart of the Côte Chalonnaise, this 37-hectare estate is now run by Amaury and Aurore Devillard, representing the fifth generation, alongside their father Bertrand. The estate stands out for its vast Premier Cru plots and exclusive monopoles. The family philosophy aims to produce wines that reflect the purity of the fruit, freshness, and authenticity of their terroir.

The vineyard

This red wine is crafted from a blend of about ten small plots spread across the village appellation area of Mercurey. The vines, averaging 35 to 40 years old, thrive at altitudes ranging between 230 and 320 metres. They grow on predominantly clay soils combined with limestone, benefiting from varied exposures ranging from east to south-southwest. The estate favours sustainable viticulture and hand-harvesting.

The vintage

2023 offered particularly favourable climatic conditions for the vines. Despite a hot summer, the growing cycle unfolded optimally, allowing for magnificent phenolic ripeness to be reached at harvest time. This generous vintage stands out for its healthy, sun-drenched grapes, offering remarkable balance.

Winemaking and aging

After a rigorous sorting process, the grapes destined for the Mercurey "Village" 2023 are partially destemmed. A 4 to 6 day cold pre-fermentation maceration precedes a fermentation of around 15 days using indigenous yeasts, punctuated by punch-downs and pump-overs. Aging takes place for 65% in French oak barrels (10% of which are new) for around 7 months, while the remaining 35% ages in stainless steel tanks. The final blend then rests for two months in tank before bottling.
