Description
The nobility of an extraordinary 1er Grand Cru Classé of Sauternes
The estate
The reputation of Château d’Yquem has been built over the past 400 years, reaching its peak in 1855 when it was elevated to the rank of Premier Cru Classé Supérieur in the official classification commissioned by Emperor Napoleon III for the Paris Universal Exhibition. The only name to have achieved this distinction, Yquem stands unchallenged among the legends of great wines.
The vineyard
Château d’Yquem has around one hundred hectares in production, planted with 75% sémillon and 25% sauvignon blanc. The Ciron, a tributary of the Garonne essential to the creation of Sauternes wines, provides an exceptional microclimate for the estate’s vines. It is thanks to its influence that morning mists develop in autumn, just before harvest, leading to the onset of noble rot, Botrytis Cinerea. Beyond the unique terroir and climate, Château d’Yquem’s reputation is also owed to its expertise and exacting standards. With drastically limited yields, Château d’Yquem produces Sauternes wines whose rarity contributes to their prestige.
The vintage
2007 is among those vintages that write the legend of Château d’Yquem, 1er Grand Cru Classé of Sauternes. Initially expected to be an early year like 1997, 2007 ultimately turned out to be a late vintage in terms of the development of the famous botrytis cinerea in the south of the Bordeaux region. Long awaited, noble rot set in from late September through early October. As in 1967, 2007 thus concluded late at Château d’Yquem, with perfect botrytis. Beyond the unique climatic conditions of this eventful year, Château d’Yquem 2007 stands out as one of the greatest Sauternes vintages.
Blend
