Decanter

Here we get the full contingency of the 80+ year old Grenache vines, with a touch still of Rolle. For both Garrus and Les Clans, cooling tubes are placed directly into the barrels, ensuring everything slows down, taking up to four months and increasing complexity along the way. On the palate is slate, stone, a beautiful finesse and the barest hint of creamy lemon and burnished red fruits that have been deepened by a year of barrel fermentation and ageing. A beautiful salinity on the finish really takes this wine into totally moreish territory. Is the score too high for a rosé? Not if you are measuring it on the sheer pleasure that it gives.

Wine Enthusiast

Roger Voss

Always aged for a year before it is released, this iconic wine is impressive. It is superrich without losing freshness. Light wood toast, red fruits and balanced acidity meld together in a ripe, spicy whole. The wine could even age for another few months, so drink it this summer or keep until the end of 2016.

The Richness and Aromatic Purity of a Great Rosé Wine from Côtes de Provence

The Estate

The Château d’Esclans is located in the heart of Provence, northeast of Saint-Tropez, with the Mediterranean Sea as a backdrop. The first mentions of Château d’Esclans date back to the Roman Empire when it served as an observation post on the Gulf of Fréjus to anticipate potential maritime incursions.

Château d’Esclans is an exceptional estate nestled in Provence. It is particularly distinguished by its old Grenache vines, which produce grapes with more concentrated aromas than those from younger vines.

Built in the 19th century, the current château has seen many owners succeed one another. Since 2006, it has belonged to Sacha Lichine and has significantly contributed to the fame of Côtes de Provence wines. Today, it is recognized worldwide for its rosés, notably thanks to the Whispering Angel cuvée.

The Vineyard

Not far from the ancient Roman city of Fréjus, on the French Riviera, lies the Esclans Valley, which hosts the 44 hectares of vines of the château. Averaging 35 years old, the vines are planted on varied soils, mixing clays, limestones, and sandy gravels depending on the plots. This diversity of terroirs gives these Provence wines a great richness of aromatic profiles.

The Wine

Originating from the eponymous plot, mainly composed of nearly century-old Grenache and Rolle, Garrus from Château d’Esclans stands as a reference among the greatest Côtes de Provence wines, embodying excellence and refinement well beyond borders.

Vinification and Aging

Harvesting is done at night, followed by manual and then optical sorting. Fermentation takes place exclusively in French oak demi-muids.

Blend
Grenache and Rolle.
