Description

A rich and balanced white wine from Pessac-Léognan

The estate

At the end of the 17th century, Château Couhins-Lurton appeared in history, peacefully traversing the centuries thanks to the good care of the Blanchereau family. In 1959, the estate was recognised for the quality of its white wines, entering the INAO (National Institute of origin and quality) classification of Graves Classified Growths. On the other hand, lower quantities of red wines are produced. When, in 1967, André Lurton caught wind of a vine uprooting project on the château’s soils, he did not hesitate to rent the plots of the estates in question and, in 1992, he succeeded in acquiring the whole estate. He then embarked on the ambitious project of restoring the château’s reputation by putting the spotlight on traditional red grape varieties, such as Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon.

The vineyard

Château Couhins-Lurton produces Pessac-Léognan wines that stem from a 21-hectare vineyard, 5 of which are dedicated to the production of white wine. Located in Villenave-d'Ornon, the estate benefits from an exceptional terroir in the heart of the Graves region and a mild oceanic climate. Château Couhins-Lurton 2021 white wine is made from vines that are 27 years old on average which cover a gentle slope leading down to a tributary of the Garonne. The soils are composed of sand, gravel and limestone which enables the Sauvignon Blanc to reveal its finest aromatic expression. The estate has been awarded the High Environmental Value level 3 certificate.

The vintage

The frost episode at the beginning of April had an impact of 60% on the white vineyard of Château Couhins-Lurton and subsequently caused a significant heterogeneity in the grape's ripeness levels. The rigour of the estate's teams enabled them to harvest healthy, balanced and aromatic grapes.

Vinification and ageing

Following the manual harvest, alcoholic fermentation is carried out in barrels following the pressing and settling. The wine is then aged for 15 months, 12 of which are spent in barrels with regular stirring of the lees.
