Château Carlmagnus 2021

The 2021 Carlmagnus exhibits aromas of cassis, dark berries and toasty oak. It is a medium-bodied, chunky, flavorful wine built around powdery tannins.

Strongly scented on the nose, lots of floral and ripe fruit aromas. Bright and shiny, a nice level of juicy acidity with crisp red fruit and quite strong salty minerality that comes in quickly where the fruit just loses some push. Feels a little overdone, but the tannins are well integrated and this has a sense of smoothness to the expression.

A blend of 95% Merlot and 5% Cabernet Franc, the 2021 Carlmagnus has a medium to deep garnet-purple color. It gives up vibrant notes of crushed blackberries and raspberries, followed by nuances of cedar chest, tar, and black olives. The medium-bodied palate is plush and refreshing, with impressive intensity and a savory finish.

Generous on the nose, with aromas of fruit, aromatic herbs and pastry. On the palate, the structure is fairly robust, yet it retains a very appealing mouthwatering quality.

Arnaud Roux-Oulié, owner of Carlmagnus, is both a winegrower and a painter. Accordingly, he adorns the 2021 vintage label with one of his works. The bouquet displays many facets, with delicacy. This subtle construction also lingers on the palate. Everything is well-balanced, with precise tannins perfectly in tune with the acidic structure. A harmonious and ambitious wine that certainly does not yet reveal the full extent of its resources.
