Decanter

A wine that expresses the sun-drenched and opulent character of the vintage, and yet Merlot does not play a leading role. The multi-layered bouquet has real depth with precise and pure aromas of blackberry and spices including cinnamon as well as a touch of tobacco and lead pencil shavings before gaining floral notes on airing. The mouthfeel is juicy and harmonious but it also reveals substantial structure and well-proportioned acidity that provide energy and thrust to attain a finish that is surprisingly light-footed and even delicate. A superb wine possessing all the requisite richness of a fine Calon Ségur as well as the power of the 2009 vintage.

James Suckling

With a lot of fennel and earthy character this is a classic St.-Estèphe, but on the palate it has a suppleness that's modern in the best sense. Needs time to soften. Drink or hold. (Horizontal Tasting, London, 2019)

Secondary notes of wet earth, tobacco, truffle, and spice are just now emerging. A bit firm for the vintage, with some leafy, herbal nuances accompanying the Cabernet Sauvignon, the wine is still young. Give it another decade in the cellar.

Falstaff

Falstaff

Intense dark ruby colour with purple hues, subtle brightening on the rim. Attractive notes of oak, fine cedar wood, roasted aromas, dark berry fruit and ripe red cherries, mineral, grapefruit zest, a multi-faceted bouquet, nuances of cardamom. Medium complexity on the palate, black cherries, vivid tannins, fresh acidity, a salty minerality on the finish, drinking well, but still needs time.

A big step up over the 2008 and, I suspect, the finest wine from this estate in the 2000s, the 2009 Château Calon Ségur reveals a healthy ruby hue to go with textbook notes of red and black currants, tobacco leaf, damp earth, gamey meats, and Asian-like spices. This is classic, traditionally made Bordeaux, with full-bodied richness, a layered, structured mouthfeel, wonderful sweetness of fruit, and a great finish. A wine that starts out tight and reserved yet builds with air, don't be afraid to give bottles plenty of air if drinking any time soon. It's certainly in its drink window, yet also has another 30-40 years of longevity ahead of it.

Weinwisser

90% Cabernet Sauvignon, 7% Merlot, 3% Petit Verdot. At 53 hl/ha, 2009 was a large harvest, and never in the history of Calon-Ségur has there been so much Cabernet. Deep purple with a dense core and garnet highlights at the rim. The bouquet is clearly defined by deep, floral Cabernet, complemented by hints of truffle, smoky nuances, walnuts, and a touch of herbs. A fleshy, very deep palate with tightly knit texture and well-supportive, demanding astringency, extremely long. A massively loaded yet refined Calon with impressive aging potential. A kind of 1961-style variant.

Fruity, fragrant, floral bouquet with blue and black berries, dried fruits, tobacco, mocha. Elegant, fresh, dense, full palate with good fruit, plenty of fine tannins, a powerful, elegant structure, and concentrated, powerful aromatics. Very long, aromatic finish. A classic, great Cabernet Sauvignon. 19/20 2016 - 2035

Plum colour, still intense right through to the core of the wine; this is a near-perfect St Estèphe, concentrated yet finessed, with balance, less muscular than you would find in most vintages of Calon today, still with depth but also nuance, full of pleasure and joy: cocoa bean, cigar box, blackcurrant, smoked earth, oyster shell finish. Owned by Denise Gasqueton at the time, and it makes me a little nostalgic for the old-school charms of this era at Calon.

Bettane+Desseauve

An absolutely remarkable whole (though it may perhaps be surpassed by the sublime 2010), where the power of the vintage does not upset the harmony of the texture and the silkiness of very noble tannins.

La RVF

The wine has not been re-tasted since bottling. As a barrel sample, it showed remarkable potential. The best Calon Ségur since the illustrious 1950s and 1960s.

Le Figaro Vin

Suave, smooth, round, superb length, beautiful volume.

The ripe, fulfilled character of 2009 is clearly expressed on the bouquet through nuances of ripe black berries, while also revealing notes of graphite and liquorice. The wine is currently in a very approachable phase, showcasing its breadth, charm, and maturity without excess. A charming wine with plenty of personality!

Logo on the cork: A in a circle (Amorim) Dark, intense, evolved color. Moderately aromatic nose, fruity but a bit simple. Caressing on the attack, developing pleasantly, with a normal body and a somewhat austere finish. Lacks the fruit maturity of the previous wines in this series. Likely bottle variation.

Description

Characteristics and tasting advice for Château Calon Ségur 2009

Tasting

Color
Beautiful deep garnet hue with purple and ruby highlights, reflecting remarkable phenolic concentration and a youthfulness that is still very present.

Nose
The nose reveals a captivating aromatic complexity with notes of blackcurrant, black cherry compote and redcurrant jam. Floral nuances of red roses intertwine with spicy touches of cinnamon and cigar box. With aeration, the bouquet evolves toward tertiary aromas of undergrowth, damp earth and graphite, accompanied by subtle notes of shiitake mushrooms and toasted almonds.

Palate
On the palate, this wine impresses with its masculine power and commanding structure. The attack reveals a viscous texture and a generous body. The tannins, extremely present yet remarkably fine and silky, lend elegant structure to the whole. The palate unfolds exceptional richness with a core of concentration and softness. The finish lingers at length, carried by vibrant acidity and radiant fruit, along with spicy notes of cocoa powder and lightly toasted touches.

Food and wine pairings
This wine pairs perfectly with grilled or roasted red meats such as ribeye steak or herb-roasted leg of lamb. It also pairs brilliantly with game preparations such as venison stew or braised wild boar. Red wine-based sauces, noble mushrooms and aged hard cheeses also make excellent matches. For the more daring, pairing it with dark chocolate will reveal surprising harmonies.

Serving and cellaring
Château Calon Ségur 2009 benefits from being decanted one to two hours before serving to allow its aromas to open and its tannins to soften. The ideal serving temperature is between 16 and 18°C. This wine can be enjoyed now but will continue to evolve until around 2050, or even beyond depending on cellaring conditions.

A Saint-Estèphe combining power and elegance

The estate
Established in 1824 and located in Saint-Estèphe (Gironde), Bordeaux, Château Calon Ségur covers 94 hectares, including 55 hectares of vines on rolling gravelly rises. A Third Growth (Grand Cru Classé) in the 1855 classification, it cultivates a unique identity inherited from the famous motto of the Marquis de Ségur, “mon cœur est à Calon”, still displayed on the label. The current owner is Suravenir Assurances (Crédit Mutuel Arkéa), which has undertaken since 2012 a technical transformation aimed at greater consistency in quality.

The vineyard
Château Calon Ségur’s vineyard enjoys a privileged location at the northern end of the Saint-Estèphe appellation. The 55 hectares of vines rest on undulating gravel soils over a clay-limestone subsoil, offering optimal drainage and remarkable mineral complexity. The proximity of the Gironde estuary creates a temperate oceanic microclimate that promotes slow, even ripening of the grapes. The vines, with an average age of 22 years, are surrounded by a historic stone wall dating back to the time of the Marquis de Ségur. The varietal mix favors Cabernet Sauvignon at 65%, complemented by 20% Merlot, 15% Cabernet Franc and a trace of Petit Verdot. Hand-harvesting and rigorous fruit selection ensure optimal quality.

The vintage
The 2009 vintage is considered one of the greatest Bordeaux vintages since 1982. The year benefited from exceptional climatic conditions, with a relatively dry summer followed by an Indian summer that extended the growing season. These circumstances made it possible to achieve unprecedented levels of phenolic ripeness. The grapes developed remarkable concentration while retaining a sophisticated structural balance. For Château Calon Ségur, this vintage represents the culmination of modernization efforts undertaken since 2006, validating investments made in restructuring the vineyard and improving winemaking protocols.

Winemaking and aging
The grapes for Château Calon Ségur 2009 were harvested by hand, with rigorous selection carried out over several passes. After meticulous sorting, the fruit was conveyed to the cellar by gravity to preserve its integrity. Vinification began with a three-day pre-fermentation cold soak, enabling the extraction of aromatic compounds and anthocyanins. Alcoholic fermentation took place in temperature-controlled stainless-steel vats with controlled pump-overs. Total maceration lasted between 22 and 25 days depending on the parcel. Aging then continued for 20 months exclusively in new French oak barrels, allowing the wine to develop complexity while harmoniously integrating the contribution of the oak. Regular rackings were performed prior to the final blend.
