Description
Characteristics and tasting tips for Château Boyd-Cantenac 2015
Tasting
Colour
This red wine displays an intense hue enhanced by deep purple highlights.
Nose
Remarkably expressive, the bouquet reveals aromas of fresh black fruit and jammy Bigarreau cherry. Delicate floral touches intertwine with notes of mocha and sweet spices from the oak ageing.
Palate
The attack is clean and opens onto a structure that is both powerful and perfectly balanced. The silky texture is supported by round, creamy tannins. The finish is impressively long and appealing, with flavours of blackcurrant and blackberry and spicy nuances.
Food and wine pairing
This fine wine pairs beautifully with grilled or roasted red meats, such as a herb-crusted rack of lamb or a generous rib-eye steak. It also enhances refined game dishes such as venison fillet, poultry with mushrooms and hard cooked cheeses like Comté or Beaufort.
Serving and cellaring
For the best tasting experience, decant this wine one to two hours before serving, at an ideal temperature of around 16°C. With excellent ageing potential, this Château Boyd-Cantenac 2015 can be enjoyed until around 2035.
The elegance and complexity of a red wine from Margaux
The estate
Founded in 1754 by Jacques Boyd, Château Boyd-Cantenac is a Troisième Grand Cru Classé located in the renowned Bordeaux region. This 17-hectare estate stands out for a surprising historical feature: it has had no château building since 1929. Owned by the Guillemet family since 1932, it is now run by Lucien Guillemet and his nephew Olivier Salques. A pioneer at heart, the estate has followed organic principles for over forty years, producing wines that authentically express the full nobility of their terroir.
The vineyard
Located on the prestigious Cantenac plateau within the Margaux appellation, the vineyard lies on siliceous gravel soils dating from the Quaternary period. These poor, warm and perfectly free-draining soils force the vines, which average 38 years of age, to root deeply. The vineyard is managed with great respect for biodiversity, using organic compost and no chemical fertilisers whatsoever. The grapes are harvested by hand and rigorously sorted so that only the healthiest berries are kept.
The vintage
2015 is recognised as an exceptional year for the Bordeaux Left Bank. The growing season unfolded very harmoniously, benefiting from ideal weather conditions for the ripening of the berries. The health of the vineyard was kept perfectly under control, allowing grapes of remarkable quality to be harvested.
Vinification and ageing
The grapes harvested to produce this Château Boyd-Cantenac 2015 are vinified plot by plot. Maceration lasts around twenty days in temperature-controlled stainless steel vats, in order to preserve aromatic freshness and gently extract the tannins. The wine is then aged for an extended period of 17 to 18 months in French oak barrels, 90% of which are new.
Grape varieties
This wine is made from a blend largely dominated by Cabernet Sauvignon, complemented by Merlot, Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc.
