The 2016 Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Champs Gains has an austere, quite reserved bouquet that needs more energy to come through. But it is focused and ups its game with aeration, revealing attractive flint and smoky notes. The palate is well balanced with a fine bead of acidity, waxy in texture with a little too much texture on the finish. Maybe a little worked in the winery? But I appreciate the energy here and a couple of years in bottle ought to see some melioration.
