Robert Parker

Yohan Castaing

Disgorged with nine grams per liter dosage in 2021, the 2012 Brut Rosé is a blend of 62% Pinot Noir and 38% Chardonnay sourced from 11 villages. Nine percent red wine from Les Ryceys has been added. Offering up aromas of blueberry, wild strawberry, pomegranate, almond and spring flowers, the palate is energetic with lively acids, perfectly balanced and juicy, but it already exudes freshness and clarity that lead to a finish with a light grace note of gastronomic bitterness. It will drink at its peak in four to six years’ time.

Decanter

This is the same as the 2012 blanc except for the 9% red wine addition. It’s a later disgorgement, though, and the effect is noticeable – it hasn’t yet developed all the patisserie richness of its sibling, instead seeming detailed and more subtle, with peach, raspberry and quince flavours sitting alongside a gentle praline richness. Touches of dark spice and toasted nuts are creeping in, too. Refined, long and balanced, this is approachable, succulent and subtly layered.

Stuart Pigott

A very elegant vintage rosé with wonderfully expressive red berry, blood orange and rhubarb aromas. Complex and finely nuanced, this glides over your palate in spite of the healthy structure. Long finish that's driven by the fine tannins and chalky minerality. The same basic blend as the 2012 vintage champagne from this house, but with 9% of red wine. Drink or hold.

Alison Napjus

Fragrant, with wafts of roasted nuts and toasted brioche — a profile that underscores the palate’s flavors of steeped raspberry, peach skin, ground coffee, vanilla and candied mandarin orange peel. Reveals vibrant, well-integrated acidity, which keeps this rich version trim and focused and drives the long, fine-textured finish. Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. Disgorged 2021. Drink now through 2035. 125 cases imported.

R.V.

Impressively young, this Champagne also has great maturity. This balance and tension gives it crisp fruit along with touches of spice. The wine, aged for 10 years on its lees, is now ready to drink.

Description

The richness and refinement of a vintage rosé champagne

The estate

The Charles Heidsieck Champagne House is a major reference, overseeing prestigious heritage land with two thousand-year-old chalk pits. A pioneer, Charles Heidsieck distinguished itself at the end of the 1980s by highlighting the exceptional aromatic evolution of its multi-vintage Brut Champagne. In 1987, Charles Heidsieck was the first Champagne house to show the "mise en cave" year, in order to follow the evolution of the wine over time.

The vineyard

The Charles Heidsieck Champagne House owns a vineyard of about 60 hectares in the Marne and Aube regions. This vineyard has been certified as a sustainable winegrowing area and has been awarded the High Environmental Value certification. In addition to its own vineyard and following the Champagne model, Charles Heidsieck is also furnished with long-term supply contracts with meticulously selected winegrowers and cooperatives in Champagne.

The wine

The Rosé Millésimé 2012 from Charles Heidsieck is made from 11 Grand and Premier Crus (Oger, Vertus, Chouilly, Cuis, Verzy, Aÿ, Ludes, Ambonnay, Tauxières, Avenay, Les Riceys). This Brut Champagne is dosed at 9g/l.

The vintage

2012 was a year marked by significant instability in Champagne. Yields were reduced by 30% due to spring conditions combining mildew, heavy rainfall, hail, but also a cool spell during flowering followed by heat peaks and high water stress. The summer, hot and sunny in August, favoured a gradual ripening of the grapes which, harvested later than in previous years, were particularly healthy and rich.

Blend

Pinot Noir (62% including 9% red wine)
Chardonnay (38%).

Characteristics and tasting tips for Rosé Millésimé 2012 from Charles Heidsieck

Colour
The colour is a beautiful coppery hue, adorned with orange highlights.
